special cards
❦ memory cards
The Memory Cards were first introduced in the
Moon Cycle 56 post on March 1, 2011. These cards are different than the usual
cards found randomly in Somarium. They essentially store different types of memories that can be replayed at any time. Design wise, the back is plain, but the front will have some sort of picture or symbol on it. These cards cannot be discarded. No matter what the character does to it-throw it away, cut it to pieces, burn it-the card will somehow for no apparent reason find its way back.
❖ activation
The first time a character sees the card, they will have this inexplicable urge to pick it up and will already start recalling some parts of whatever memory that card represents. The Memory Card needs to be swiped into the Dreamberry before it can be "activated". However, instead of being "forced" to swipe it like normal cards, characters have the option on whether or not to swipe the card-even for the first time. That is to say, it is possible for a character to never swipe and activate the card.
Should a character swipe the card, there are no physical and mental changes. Instead, the memory itself plays on the Dreamberry just like any other normal video. These are not broadcast and only play to the owner. The memory will feel very real to the character, almost as if they were re-experiencing whatever the memory is.
A character can "replay" the memory as often as they want. Think of the card as an old home movie video.
❖ menu
Because there are multiple memories stored in the card, characters can choose which one to view after the card has been swiped. The memories are indicated by special symbols.
❖ original/memory
The first memory is essentially any random memory of the player's choice. This memory can be good or bad, silly or significant. The symbol for this memory is "♦".
❖ vision of desire
This is the new "memory" that has been added to the card. Though "memory" is quite the misnomer. As the label suggest, this is more of a vision of whatever the character desires most. This can range from silly (like a world made of cake) to the lustful (NSFW imagery goes here). Unlike the other memory, these can be accidentally broadcast to the network. Not all of them will, and it is up to the player if this should happen. NOTE: If you do broadcast the vision, please put any high rated content under a cut with warnings. NSFW content is allowed, but if it gets in the R-rated territory, you must also F-Lock it. You can think of these "visions" like dream posts, even though they are not dreams. The symbol for this memory is "♥".
❖ twisted future
characters will find themselves watching a dark future set in their home world. This future could have already come to pass, one based off their fears, or one that could happen due to their own actions or choices they have made or have to make. Had they been granted an offer before? A choice to join one side, but instead went to another? A battle that must be won, but instead was lost? This vision will essentially show the characters the dark possibilities that could have happened-or may still happen. You could consider this similar to a "Bad End," or bad ending for a game.
This vision can be broadcast across the network, and will function similar to a normal Dream Post. As mentioned above, in the options menu, once this memory has been played, the following symbol will be in its place: "♠".
❦ vintage card
These cards were introduced before the
1920s AU event in the
Moon Cycle 59. The back appears faded, yellowed, and burnt around the edges. The front displays the character's own face, photographed in sepia tones. It basically looked like
this. Only those who were around for the event will have this card, and it will play whatever alternate life they had during the event.
❦ world memory
The third type of special card has a unique design. On one side, there is a full moon, and on the other there is a black moon. During the phases of the moon, one moon will shimmer while the other remains dull. Characters can guess the implications of that. In these cards are various visions and memories that can be viewed only to them.
❖ first vision
First introduced on
Moon Cycle 57, March 8, 2011. The following vision was played:
A young girl is wandering through the halls of what looks to be a high class, luxuriously decorated building. She is holding a stuffed rabbit plushie.
Behind her, a shadow flickers and moves. At first the shadow has no shape. Just a dark, black shadow gliding across the floor. But as it drew nearer, the girl still blissfully unaware, the shadow started to change form. A head appeared, then the shoulders, the torso, the hips, the legs-a woman with long black hair. Her pale face is obscured by the shadows, but her blood red lips were curved to a cold smile.
"Precious."
The girl gasped as she turned around, her eyes wide. Before she could even scream, the woman raised her hand and a long, black nail extended from her index finger to pierce through the girl's forehead. What trickled out was not blood, but waves of energy. It came in all sorts of colors, though most were predominantly light blue, and the waves streamed toward the center of the woman's forehead. The girl's mouth opened as if to scream, but nothing came out. She clawed at her neck, as if trying to gasp for air. The shadows around the woman flew up and wrapped themselves around the girl. It burned her, but she could not move.
Soon the girl had been completely drained, yet seemed to still be alive. The woman raised her up, smiling.
"Sweet dreams," she whispered before streams of black poured through the nail and into the girl's writhing body. Again the girl could do nothing-only relive her darkest nightmares.
The vision blacks out for a moment, and the next scene is of the girl-now translucent-lying on the ground in front of what looked to be an empty throne. Translucent ooze pooled around her. Other figures were standing around her-also translucent. And soon other figures started to appear.
The ones from different worlds.
❖ second vision
First introduced on
Moon Cycle 58, March 15, 2011. The following vision was played:
The setting was unfamiliar. It looked like a small military base camp located somewhere out in the desert. Soldiers patrolled the area, armed with guns and rifles. Men and women in research labcoats walked to and from the various buildings, some talking on their cellphones, others scribbling furiously on clipboards.
The scene changes to inside what looked to be a small conference room. Both military and research personnel gathered around a table, papers and diagrams strewn over the table.
"We don't have much time. They'll arrive within the next three days, possibly sooner."
"Has the main city been evacuated?"
"Only a few groups left. It should be completed within the next 24 hours."
"Once they're through, we must destroy all of the Dreamgates. It will be a great loss, but we can't risking her getting through."
For a brief moment, the image of a woman with long, black hair appears, a smile curving her lips.
"Is there really no other way?"
A moment of silence before the voice spoke again.
"No, there is not. The Dreamwalkers have been weakened by recent attacks. We can't rely on them to delay the inevitable any longer."
Another person bursts through the doors, exclaiming, "We have finished moved their bodies to the secret base! Everything is set and ready. We've contacted the other bases along the range and are ready for deployment, sir."
A brief flash of large doors closing, surrounded by a mountain range.
"Then begin the countdown. We have 72 hours to pack up everything and head back to Somni-"
Everyone is startled as the ground started to shake beneath them before screams could be heard from outside.
"What!? No it can't be-"
Outside, soldiers were fighting strange, black shadowy monsters. They broke through the desert ground and materialized out of the shadows. Bodies fell as each side fought. From a nearby garage, a tank burst through the doors, blasting white light at the creatures.
