My husband has a PhD in Philosophy of Science (not an easy PhD to obtain) and he is absent-minded and proud of it.

Airheads are defined as people who are stupid or incapable of serious thought.

Absent-minded are defined as so lost in thought as to be unaware of their surroundings. Abstracted and preoccupied is a synonym.

Once you offer him the definitions, let's see whether he is still upset about your loving description of him.

My Mark is a sensitive soul. I understand, and yes, dear lord, we're still talking about this...that he been put down for being absent minded, by, stupid people.
His family, oh, lordy, I won't even go there. And the fact that he has epilepsy, and isn't working, due to the fact that his seizures have always been unpredictable, and uncontrollable--since he was 7, doesn't help his self esteem much.
But, Edith, you will not find, a more caring, loving, considerate, honest patient man, anywhere. And FAITHFUL. Even during the times we weren't speaking, he never was with another woman.
And that, is a rare and wonderful thing.

Remind him that the stereotype is "absent-minded professor", not "absent-minded stupid person".

Heck, I can be pretty darn absent-minded myself...and I know I'm not stupid!
