back from book club...
So we were discussing The Handmaid's Tale. And I found it very amusing that this guy thought that the scenario in the book could never happen.
I think the scenario in the book is pretty much what the far religious right in the US wants to have happen. -

Most icons on LJ are made from copyrighted images that the maker doesn't own. (My current default icon being a notable exception.) Which I think is fine; while it may not be technically legal (I'm not sure if it would fall under 'fair use' as defined in the US or not), I think it would be silly to legally prosecute anyone using copyrighted imagery ( Read more... ) -
so I like reading amazon.com book reviews...
And I've noticed that every so often I'll come across a review that says something like this:
"This is a good book, but has explicit sexual content and is not suitable for children."
All well and good, except that the book in question is never a book that in any way claims to be "suitable for children.". So really, why would anyone assume that ( Read more... ) -

high fantasy
I don't think the high fantasy thing. Apparently high fantasy is only written in a quasi-medieval type universe. I don't know why that is. Is it because of Tolkien? How come nobody ever writes fantasy in another time period? There's lots of time periods you could potentially write fantasy in; every age has its folklore and myths that could be used ( Read more... )
