Oh, it's so great to see an update from you. Your writing evokes so many emotions from me!
I think the Harts are being super judgmental. Megan judges Ryan's biological family - with her two words, "Thank G-d" and then there's the constant judging of the Cohens. It's almost as if she feels guilty for not taking the final step that the Cohens finally took. With all their imperfections, the Cohens are the ones who took Ryan in and gave him a family life.

Thank you, famous! You put into words what I've been trying to say to Chase for much of this story. While I love it (or maybe love to hate it?) my loyalties still run to the Cohens for this very reason, even though I know Chase would say that the Harts were Young Ryan's salvation, at a time when there was no one else.

Chase - these 2 lines resonated with me:

One thing he’s always liked about the Cohens - they let him leave things buried. He’s always sensed they prefer it that way, which has always worked for him.

He ducks his head, embarrassed. He’s not quite sure what he deserves, but he’s pretty sure he’s gotten more than his due these last few years - especially given the horrendous price others have paid for lesser mistakes than his.

The 2nd is so classically self-effacing Ryan.

And the first....well, it ties in with your final lines.

Might silence have been worse than talking after all?
Would anyone have listened?Yes, I believe at least Sandy would have listened. But do we imagine that canon Ryan would really have ( ... )

Oh . . . so good. So very good. I love the way you look at both sides of the issue - Ryan's observation that the Cohens didn't know him as a child, that he was already thoroughly battered by life when he came to him, is acute and telling. And of course the lack of communication between Ryan and the Cohens is a two way street; As often as they've screwed up in failing to address issues that lie between them and their foster son, it has to be acknowledged that Ryan is complicit in that as well ( ... )

Thank you for sharing your perspectives. I think perhaps we share some of the same thoughts with respect to canon Cohens.

I'm curious, though. Do you think Ryan would have ever felt comfortable bringing up his issues with the Cohens, without their insisting that he do so? I don't see him ever taking the lead -- not when their faces practically froze the first time he mentioned getting his 'ass kicked'. I'd guess after that he'd keep his issues buried, unless they pressed him to talk.

A good question . . . for which I honestly don't have an answer ( ... )

Interesting comment about Sophie.

I wrote that story, but it was in response to a challenge where Sophie asks why Ryan doesn't call the Cohens 'Mom' and 'Dad'. I think it's possible she could be the catalyst that finally makes them a family, but I actually think it could very well lead to Ryan staying away, thinking he'd be in the way.

Kirsten has never sought him out when he's left Casa Cohen -- she leaves it up to Sandy and/or Seth to stay in touch with him. I could see them (particularly Kirsten and Ryan) drifting apart quite easily.

However, I'd like to think that without Seth on hand, the Cohens might form a stronger bond with Ryan. Maybe they'd actually talk with him, rather than to him. Maybe Kirsten would have a conversation with him where she's not chiding him for his actions or inactions with some girl (or not pushing him into seeing another destructive Atwood relative).

Like you, I find both scenarios possible. Optimism is good.
