I've always thought of Facebook as a way to keep in touch with people you went to high school with, friends from childhood, etc. Social networking.

Right when I joined Facebook I thought "Hey, I will get to meet cool chicks on here." But that impression faded fast as more and more people joined and it changed in my view to be almost exclusively for social interactions. Sure you can try and find a date on Facebook, and there are a couple features that might make that easier, but no one I know thinks of it primarily as a dating service.

Interestingly enough, in Facebook there's a feature that lets two people in a relationship to declare as such. The field is "Relationship Status" and it can read several things like "In a Relationship with John Doe" or "Married ot Suzie Q," or even "It's complicated with Jane Public." Usually when a relationship is registered like that all your friends know it's somewhat serious; it's "Facebook Official".
