I had been debating learning french also, mainly because of all the other choices I would use it more, especially when going over the boarder. XD I wanted to learn chinese and russian too, just because one is useful and the other is just one i like to know. good luck! at least you are in a french speaking area, should be easier to pick up that way.

give it a go! ^^ my dad has learnt several languages just from tapes and CDs.

i have dyslexia, so the learning is a lot slower for me. as it's not an obvious disability, it gets a bit tiring to have to remind people or explain to them why i've not picked up much so far. otherwise i worry that come across as lazy or not caring that i only speak english. ^^;

but it does help to be in a french area, and the occasional bilingual sign and etc really does help me. still working on my numbers! they say them too fast at the till when i'm shopping. :p *lol*

Does the city run any language classes you might be able to sign up to? Alternatively, do you know anyone who could help you out with French and you could do something in return for them (art and craft classes for example)?

Or else maybe insist that Will tries to speak to you in French for 10 minutes per day?

I think you just have to persevere and regularly practise.

As for numbers, they're almost the worst. When I first moved to Madrid, they used to reel off phone numbers so quickly I had to write them down as they said them and *then* figure out what they'd actually said! It never helped that they might say 91 523 14 62 (that's the number to get a request on the Madrid station's Saturday night jukebox, fact fans) as ninety one, five, twenty three, fourteen, sixty two.

i'd need to get an education permit and money is tight right now. :/ i think immigration offers free classes, but not at this point in the immigration process.

will and others do try, but i need to have every single word translated to english and then i'd have to repeat that for ages and it's a slow process. speaking to me solely in a language won't help me learn, or else i'd have picked it up right now. :p i do keep practising, i nearly can remember the words of parts of my body like hands, feet and etc! next is learning what the words look like when written down.

That's true about kids' programmes. I tend to understand a lot more of what's going on in Mysterious Cities of Gold than I do in the live action Asterix movies...
