I disagree. the modern trend is not that we're more accepting of other cultures, it's that we hold other cultures as superior to our own, and trying to form or maintain an 'American' culture is seen as selling out or racist. We're catering to the egos of a select few that feel the need to inflict their heritage on us whether we like it or not.

The 1950s cookie-cutter ideal was no more a true reflection of life in that era than the proper Victorian family was a reflection of Victorian England ( ... )
