Io molto povera

My current rant is on the strength of the U.S. Dollar. When I arrived in Europe in September, the exchange rate was 1.12 U.S. Dollar to 1 Euro which was already ridiculous since it was 0.86 U.S. Dollar to 1 Euro about a year ago. I just checked for the most updated exchange rate and the markets closed at 1.21 U.S. Dollar to 1 Euro yesterday. ( Read more... )

Part of it is that the Euro is at record highs...that doesn't help. It's probably going to get worse too, the dollar is expected to continue its decline against the Euro for a while. That's what we get for running a huge deficit while at the same time making every other country on the planet jumpy...doesn't give them a whole lot of confidence in our economy.

It's supposed to hover anywhere from 1.25 to 1.35 over the next 6 months. Ouch :(

I shed many tears as I watch my bank account decline at such a sharp rate. So glad I'm going back to the States in a week.

I know! I got rammed HARD in the @ss with a broomstick when I visited Europe. But it wasn't quite as bad as it is now. I think it was somewhere in the 1.15 range, since I went to Europe only about a month after you did. I don't think the fees were as bad with credit card transactions. Each debit transactions indicated a conversion fee, but the credit statement didn't say anything of the sort; maybe it was a hidden charge (who knows). I understand that Bush doesn't have everything to do with the poor economy, with it being cyclic, but Bush certainly hasn't made things better...
