First Spring Planting
This spring, I've planted starts from the store: some lovely red cabbages and several different types of lettuces. These went into the hoed and fertilized rows, in between the rapidly maturing broccoli and lettuces that overwintered. It's time--past time, really--to wake the garden up. The fall broccoli's having one of those growth spurts that makes it look as though someone has been sneaking out at night and replacing each head with a new, larger bunch. Veggie anti-vandals ( Read more... ) -

April showers, May showers...
When the days stretch out like this--I've missed the sun!--I find I appreciate the rain FAR more than I do when the sun's up at 7am (barely) and gone again before 4pm.

Darn but the older blueberry bush--the huge one I've had for years, brought from our old place and last fall finally put into the ground--is being killed off by some kind of fungus. I guess it didn't appreciate being transplanted. I pruned it hard and have my fingers crossed that what is left (which looks pretty healthy) isn't harboring more of ( Read more... ) -

Purslane
As opposed to last year's careful measurement of the spaces in between seeds, I scattered these sparsely. I'd love it if doing this the lazy way beats doing it right. -
Onions
Red Torpedo onions (from Territorial) went in yesterday, 3/24. With my son and the puppy needing attention outside while I was planting, I didn't get the other 2 bunches of sets in. Maybe tomorrow.

March is getting away from me!
It's been difficult to find much time to keep up with spring garden chores, never mind posting about them, due to the arrival of Juneau, our now 13 week old Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppy. She's completely stolen our hearts. Still working on housebreaking, but she's already got the basic commands down and jogs/walks extremely well on a lead. Smart girl ( Read more... ) -
Not bored yet
The peas are up! I can't get over it; it seems impossible that a huge, wildly grasping tangle of vines could arise from such an unimpressive little wrinkled, dried greenish-gray blob of a seed. It's not even an nice looking blob--dried peas are very unattractive ( Read more... )
