My work in progress is the first book in a murder mystery series with an amateur detective.  I've read that publishers prefer mystery series to one-shot mysteries, since a reoccurring character can grow a fan base with each book.

Last night, I had dinner with Stacy and Brian.   It was a great dinner and a lot of fun.  Luckily, Brian and Stacy have always done a good job of not making me feel like a third wheel.  Actually, considering that Stacy and I have known each other for over twenty years, I suspect there are times that Brian feels like a third wheel instead.
