A Welcome back, Jack message is written on the wall of his coffee house - because what would Jack’s be without a cryptic message scrawled on his wall in blood red?

If honey's what you covet,
You'll find that I love it,
Because I'll guzzle
Up the thing you prize!

The city's going downhill,
So I'll give it a thrill
And I'll take any gift of love

I never realized eating breakfast by myself could be so lonely. I stopped by Jack's Place today. I've never been there before. They make good coffee, but Bonanza's rolls are much, much better.

Mr. Pitt called this afternoon, and I told him about seein' Mr. Greene, but he said Kevin was right, and he was s'posed to be goin' in there. Somehow I think if we were standing together, he'd have been lookin' away like Kevin did. It's his business, however, and I'm goin' to do what he asked, and not worry about it.

I turned the radio off when my last appointment left. I don't need any love songs makin' me think more about what I'm missin'. He said he should be back on Friday, so I can lie to myself and say it's only three more days. Monday's over already, then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and then he'll be home.

I go see Starre Jacoby on a fool’s errand this morning. Barty’s still got his panties in a bunch about Pitt and thinks we can get at him through his girlfriend. Because all women are simpletons, of course, whilst men are master criminals and schemers. Does he think there’s some drug business going through the motel or something? I don’t know. He’s being all mysterious about it. I’d be angry (me? Surely not) but to be honest I feel too guilty about the loan deputy from Langmont who’ll be arriving this afternoon, and who Barty knows nothing about because I haven’t worked out how to tell him. He’ll hate me. Maybe he’ll fire me. Maybe I won’t care. I’m really, really tired of this town ( ... )

Dr. Tom has been in a much better mood today than he has been since Mitchell acted out on Halloween. He's like a completely different person! He thanked me for making his chai, which I just always do, so it wasn't anything special. He even complimented me on my hair. For the last couple of weeks I think I could have been bald and he wouldn't have noticed, but today he was all smiles.

I wonder if maybe it's because Ms. McIntyre's been laid to rest. Maybe that was the end of an era or something, and now things will be different, for Dr. Tom and for the whole town. That would be nice, but I suppose after living in Cougar Ridge for six years, I know better than to count on that.

Maybe now he'll finally either ask Starre out, or say that he's not interested, and give poor Elizabeth some relief. Me, too, because I swear she talks about nothing else, unless we're at the salon or the Bonanza.

This day has been utter hell for me. So I get phone calls about items going missing. Someone stole a teddy bear from a teacher who lives above Starre. Someone stole an autographed movie photo. And someone stole...apparently nothing. I hate this damned town ( ... )

So I'm at the grocery store getting stuff for Thanksgiving. Uncle Ho and his family along with Aunt Hua are flying into Denver tomorrow. Dad and Quon are going to pick them up, though Dad loaned me the Cherokee so that I could pick up all the food. Cousin Jiang eats like a horse, and I'm sure he could polish off one of these ten pound turkeys by himself ( ... )
