II.

Junsu could not deny that he had his own reservations and suspicions as well, but he decided to give Yunho the benefit of the doubt. After all, Park Yoochun was just a bystander, oblivious to the details of their relationship. Junsu blamed himself for being so foolish, to trust an acquaintance that he had met for only a day. He would prove Park Yoochun wrong when Yunho came back, for sure.

When Yunho called again, it was to remind Junsu to pick him up from the airport. Meticulous as he was, Junsu came early, just in case Yunho arrived earlier than expected. With nothing to do, he sat down fiddling with his phone, waiting for Yunho to turn up.

Announcements overhead declared that Yunho’s plane had landed. Overjoyed, Junsu stood up and caught a glimpse of Yunho’s perfect torso, but his greeting died on his lips.

Yunho was wearing a smart fedora atop his newly dyed hair, coupled with casual shorts and a purple patterned sweater. But his arm was around another man, holding him in an intimate embrace that Junsu could never have the privilege to be in.

Kim Jaejoong.

“Back so soon?” Yoochun was not at all surprised when he heard his door being pushed open roughly, revealing an agitated Junsu. “I expected you to turn up drunk, but you look unexpectedly sober to me.”

“What is your motive for doing this?” Junsu grabbed Yoochun by the blue-collared shirt he was wearing. “Why do you want to break us up?”

“I merely wanted you to see the truth, Mr. Kim.” Yoochun wrenched his collar free and served Junsu red wine as if they were simply exchanging normal, friendly conversation.

“How long have you known?” All the fight gone out of Junsu, he slumped down beside Yoochun on the couch.

“Two months now. They’ve been very open about their relationship, as you can see. Ever since the last time I travelled to Jeju with Jaejoong, they’ve been together. I’ve always been a very sensitive man, Junsu, I observe, and I learn. Unlike you, who choose to remain blissfully oblivious to the fact that your lover has been cheating on you for a while.” Yoochun remarked.

“How can you be so calm?” Junsu whispered brokenly. It only seemed like yesterday when he was out on his first date with Yunho, but even then, they had to be discrete … unlike Jaejoong …

What was Yunho doing now? Did he notice that Junsu had not appeared at the airport? Had he sensed anything amiss?

“Junsu. I know this is hard, but you have to pretend as if you haven’t gotten wind of this matter yet.”

“Pretend?” Junsu gave a bitter chuckle. “Pretend that I haven’t seen the two of them hugging each other at the airport? Pretend that I’m still the obedient, stupid mutt that is always giving? How can I keep up this pretense, like you, Mr. Park?”

He gulped down the alcohol in his glass, choking slightly as it burned his throat, mingled with his tears. He suddenly wished that he was drunk, unconscious to the world. That way, he didn’t have to cope with the realistic betrayal that caused his agony.

“Junsu, listen to me.” There was a severity in Yoochun’s tone that made him do so. “Kim Jaejoong has stolen something precious from me and before I can expose his affair with Jung Yunho, I have to gather concrete evidence of their relationship. And I will need your help.”

“I don’t want to help anybody right now. I don’t want to listen to any more of your lies!” Eyes swimming, Junsu wanted to leave but a hard punch was delivered to his cheek, sending him flying to the ground. The impact steadied his emotions and he did not struggle as Yoochun tackled him, turning him face up.

“Junsu, calm down. Please,” There was desperation in Yoochun’s tone now. “Please, help me.”

It seemed like an eternity had passed before Junsu parted his lips to speak. “… What do you want me to do?”

Sliding his feet out of his sneakers in the hallway, he realised how exhausted he felt. The truth about Yunho’s affair with Jaejoong weighed heavily on his shoulders, and now that he was entrusted with a greater task, he could not breathe easy. Junsu had never been a good liar, even though it didn’t mean that he displayed his emotions openly on his face. Shuffling towards the bedroom, Junsu stopped short when he glimpsed Yunho sitting on the couch in complete darkness.

“Yunho-hyung …” Junsu began awkwardly.

“Where have you been?” Yunho’s face was stony.

“At Yoochun’s.” Junsu didn’t want to lie just to make Yunho feel better.

“At Yoochun’s?” Yunho repeated, standing up to his full height and pressed towards Junsu. “This is the first time you have ever stood me up at the airport. I must have looked like an idiot, waiting for you to turn up and calling you every two seconds while you were gallivanting with Park Yoochun all day!” He gripped Junsu’s arm as the latter cried out painfully.

Junsu wished that he could expose Yunho right there and now, that he was not the one who betrayed their relationship, that he witnessed Yunho and Jaejoong’s intimacy with his own eyes, but he had made a promise to help Yoochun, so he chose to keep mum. Unfortunately, Yunho misunderstood his intentions as guilty silence.

“So you admit that you stood me up just for that bastard Park Yoochun? Kim Junsu, I never imagined that you would stoop this low.” Without warning, Junsu received a tight slap on his already-wounded cheek, turning it red instantly.

“Why don’t you choose to trust me?” Junsu was unable to stop the tears running down to his chin.

“Trust?” Yunho laughed. “You’re the one who betrayed our relationship, and you speak with me of trust?”

“You know what you did best. I don’t wish to explain something that I haven’t done, especially to a man who does not trust me at all.” Junsu wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. “Let go of me.”

Yunho refused to relax the hold that he had on Junsu’s arm. What did Junsu mean by that? Had he found out about his affair with Jaejoong? No … that was impossible, Yunho consoled himself. Junsu had been together with Yoochun all day. He wouldn’t have seen him embracing Jaejoong at the airport. Looking at Junsu’s red-rimmed eyes, all his anger and jealousy dissipated, leaving behind only guilt and sorrow.

“Junsu … I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have thrown my temper at you. You’re right; I should have trusted you.” Yunho apologised, raising a hand to stroke Junsu’s cheek. Junsu was taken aback by the sudden softening of Yunho’s attitude, but he did not show it.

“I’m tired. Let’s go to bed.” Refusing to acknowledge Yunho’s apology, Junsu made for their bedroom and climbed into bed, carefully arranging himself such that there was a huge space in the middle of the bed. Minutes later, he heard Yunho closing the door behind them and felt pressure on the other side of the mattress as he lay down with Junsu, back to back.

Perhaps they were not meant to be, Junsu flipped over after he was certain that Yunho had fallen asleep, eyes boring into his back. Perhaps the place beside Yunho could only be filled by a more worthy candidate than him, Kim Junsu. Perhaps only Kim Jaejoong could untie the knot in Yunho’s heart. His Yunho-hyung ... was gone since the day Jung Yunho left for Seoul six years ago.

They were crouching in the corner of a street in Gangnam District, breaths coming in short pants as they peered around a streetlamp.

“Yah … Park Yoochun, remind me why I am doing this with you again? We look suspicious,” Junsu prodded the other man, eyeing the passers-by who shot them dirty glances.

“Shush, Jun-chan. This is the best time to search Jaejoong’s room, I saw Jaejoong leaving with Yunho earlier. They must be going for dinner together.” Yoochun spied Junsu’s downcast expression. “Cheer up, Jun-chan. After we expose their affair, I’m sure Jung Yunho will go back to your side.”

“We can never be back together again, even if he chooses me over Jaejoong.” Junsu replied, his face neutral.

Upon his words, Yoochun grew serious. “Junsu, the two of you are different from what Jaejoong and I have turned out to be. The two of us have reached the point of no return … things have turned ugly for us. But for you and Yunho, as long as you are willing, you can still mend your relationship with him.” He patted Junsu’s hand comfortingly.

Feeling the warmth that enveloped his cool hands, Junsu remembered how he had admired Yoochun’s hands when they first met. His hands were the perfect hands of a lover … Subconsciously, he held on to Yoochun’s hand. Junsu was surprised when Yoochun did not release their entwined hands.

“The coast is clear. Let’s go!” Pulling Junsu up, they sped towards the back gates of the Kim mansion and shinnied up a tree that would lead them to Kim Jaejoong’s room.
