The toddler crawled along the floor of the cockpit at the captain’s feet. She inspected his worn dirty boots for a moment before continuing on her way. Like her mother she had an inquisitive mind and was bent on finding the answers to every question her little brain came up with. The wires under the console were proving to be infinitely fascinating at the moment and she crawled towards them to get a closer look.
The floor beneath her vibrated slightly with her daddy’s heavy footsteps as he approached the cockpit, her mama’s soft quick tread a pace behind.
“Now, where’s my little girl?” She could hear the smile in his voice and her excitement spiked. She knew what came next, it happened every time Mama and Daddy had someone else take care of her. Aunt Kaylee had told her that they needed ‘alone time’ and she’d spend a few hours watching the mechanic tinker in the engine room or sitting on Mal’s lap while he steered the ship in Mama’s chair, but she thought the time away from her must be awful for them because whenever they returned her daddy would scoop her up in his big arms and toss her in the air. She didn’t go as high as she used to, but it still felt like flying. Then Mama would kiss her cheeks and she’d get a quick ‘I love you’ before being hoisted to her daddy’s shoulders where he would let her ride around for a while. Her mama gave the best hugs in the ‘verse, but being able to ride on Daddy’s shoulders was an exceptional delight.
“No, seriously Mal, where’s my kid?” The laughter dropped from his voice when he didn’t immediately see his daughter where she was hidden under the console. She could see the captain’s legs move slightly as he turned in his seat, craning to look around the cockpit’s floor for the wayward child.
“She was right here a minute ago.” His voice sounded confused. “She couldn’t have gone far.”
“You LOST my daughter?” Daddy was using his scary voice. She’d never heard it directed at her and she hoped she never would, but it still made her whimper in fear.
Before her snivels could turn into full on tears Mama was pulling her out from under the console with her sure but delicate hands under the girl’s armpits.
“You’re getting heavy pumpkin,” Mama grunted, hefting the girl onto her hip and rocking slightly to ease her fear. Her little hands fisted into Mama’s shirt as she pressed her face into her shoulder. She felt the panic start to drift away with the swaying motion and knew that everything would be alright because her daddy and her mama were there and when she was with them nothing bad could ever happen to her.
