The sponge left a shiny trail of soapy water across the baby’s skin as Jayne gently washed the squirming infant. She splashed her hands in the shallow water of the basin she was in and delighted in the spray that erupted, sending little droplets every which way. Jayne smiled at the girl’s antics and rubbed his face against his shoulder to dry the water off his cheeks.

“Yer gettin’ to be a real troublemaker, ya know that?” he grumbled. His words were ones of annoyance, but the pride in his voice couldn’t be hidden. She was an active baby, keeping her parents on their toes and everyone could tell she was going to be something special when she grew up.

“Of course she’s a troublemaker, takes after you.” He looked over his shoulder at his wife where she sat against the wall, head resting on her knees tucked against her chest, watching him attempt to clean their energetic daughter.

“Damn right.” He grinned and returned to the baby, pouring a small amount of shampoo into his palm and rubbing it through the downy hair on the infant’s head. A thought occurred to him and he paused briefly before filling a cup with the warm bathwater and pouring it over the girl’s head.

“Hey Riv?” He chewed his lip and spared a glance back at her. “Did ya ever think ‘bout havin’ more? Kids, I mean. Ya know, maybe givin’ this little one a brother or sister?”

River took in a deep breath and let it out slowly as she contemplated the question. “One gift is enough, greed does not suit us.”

He nodded, brow furrowed in thought, “Yer right I guess.” His frown turned to a grin as he addressed the cooing baby, “Yer too much trouble as it is. Any more a ya and we’d never get a moment’s rest.” The baby giggled her agreement while Jayne wrapped a towel around her small body and placed a kiss on her wet forehead.
