I remember growing up when my house doors were never locked. I liked it that way a lot. I'm still not used to this new rule my dad made saying the doors must be locked at all times. and, just to add to much of what you said, fear does come in large part from the media.
but what does the media have to gain in creating a sense of fear in the american public?
well, who runs the media? big business and government.
who benefits when people are afraid? big business and government.
people buy when they're afraid, people trust authority when they're afraid. people don't act out, don't revolt, when they're afraid. ("how could we possibly protect ourselves from anthrax or killer bees? we should rely on the government to take care of us. the government wouldn't lie to us, they're here to help.")
when people are desperate, when people are afraid, they turn to a higher (religion, government) power for help.
the media keeps people afraid because keeping people afraid keeps them subservient.
