[The Doctor flips on his communicator. It's dim, and he's looking rather unsettled.]
Hello, from the Archives. I've been told there's monsters in the fog. The red spaces on our maps. If I say Vashda Narada, does that ring a bell for anyone?
Vashda Narada are.....shadows. Not every shadow, but any shadow could be. They're carnivores. Can strip flesh right off the bone. Usually they're scavengers, but sometimes a concentration of them can get aggressive.
I suppose the relevant questions are whether anyone has stumbled across a bare skeleton near one of the red areas, or noticed anyone with multiple shadows.
[Because the residents of this city needed more nightmare fuel, Doctor.]
There's been a lot of talk about monsters since I got here. [ he scratches his chin, hmm-ing under his breath. ]
... Speaking from what I've seen, though, there haven't been any dead bodies to match your description. [ it'll be nice if it stays like that, he supposes, but with the spread of the zones through the green... ]
Oh well, that's good. [The Doctor nods, and amends his statement.]
The lack of bodies. There's not much that can be done tofight Vashda Narada. I have but that was special circumstances. What have you heard about the monsters here?
[ what has he heard. kubota smiles congenially, moves to pop a cigarette in his mouth and light it, organising his thoughts.
... funny. it seems like things burn slower than they used to, these days. his pack of seven stars is still half full. ]
About that, I haven't encountered them as much as some of the old-timers. But dealing with things like that isn't a new occurrence, it seems.
The one I shot had a tough hide. [ he smiles lazily, gives a kind of pseudo-gun shape with one hand, perpendicular to the screen. ] It's not nice, but I had to shoot it through the eye, in the end. They won't let you avoid them entirely, when they come like that.
... I don't know whether it'll be the same kind next time. That may not be much help.
We were in one of the largest libraries to ever exist in my home universe - long story. I told them to look me up. I think they decided not to risk my already shot temper.

Can you explain further? Maybe it's just a different word for something we already know about?

Shadows that eat people?
How...how could we be sure? It would be good to know before we find any bare skeletons anywhere.

[He says that, knowing his inclination is usually to run to the trouble, to at least see what it is.]
What exactly is supposed to be in the fog?

I'll try to stay out of the fog, then.

[Pause]
--I had assumed you meant sunlight. Would artificial light suffice? Or perhaps fire?

[He clears his throat.]

[He sounds a bit embarrassed at that.]

[He's increasingly disoriented. He's also stubborn as hell, and reluctant to retreat.]
