The secret to no deadlocks is: "No thread may hold a lock on one object while it waits for a lock on an object with a lower sequence number". I've been using Visual C++ 6.0 Professional Edition to do my programming. No idea how much it cost me (would've been academic price from the Melbourne Uni Bookroom, IIRC).
