A couple of pics from our daughter's house.

Last Thursday, before the weather turned cold and frosty, S2C and I went up to D-d's to take the desktop computer, that he had just replaced with a new one, and install it in NYK2's room. Her brother got the last one - my husband replaces his computer every 3 years or so, and NYK's was definitely the oldest by now as it was the one her brother had ( Read more... )

I was hoping the critter was a wombat (you have them on the Island, don't you?) but a hedgehog is also nice. And that's a spectacular view from the landing.

(Edit: my mistake, it's wallabies and not wombats. Oh, well, animal starting with the letter W and coming from Australia...)

Congratulations on winning over your suspicious birds. I need to check the window box out front and see if they've discovered the seed -- not that I can tell whether it's birds or squirrels unless I see the critters coming and going. This strategy isn't going to give Buddy any cultural enrichment, though, as long as he sticks to my lap like Velcro.

I am the only wombat... because, yes, we have wallabies :)

You can tell from the roof of the neighbours' house that they live on a fairly steep hill. In fact they are the last house, so the highest up, and on the edge of the village, so they have beautiful views out of every window. I would be envious, but then I can see the sea from my house... :)

It seems as if Buddy will only get his cultural enrichment if you move to sit right beside the window :)

The birds are indeed hyperactive at the moment, trying to get as much food as possible. I had to hang up more bird fat balls, because strong winds dislodged many of the older ones. But a hedgehog out in winter? We still have some of them in our garden, but never saw one at this time of the year!

My fat balls are in a wire feeder that holds 3 at a time - when we tried hanging them up individually they were sometimes blown down, and were also knocked down by the jackdaws so they could eat them more easily!

We do see a hedgehog at our house sometimes, in the summer and autumn evenings - but I was most surprised to see this one in the afternoon in early January!

How exciting to see a hedgehog! Of course they aren't native here. Many years ago I saw a pygmy hedgehog in a pet store. It was so cute I had to convince myself it would be a bad idea to take it home.

The winter scene is beautiful.

They really are cute, but I had honestly never thought of them as pets until now. We think of them as friends who visit the garden and eat the slugs... and have fleas that they are very willing to share if you ever manage to pick one up!

They do have beautiful views from their house - and the snow on the hills made taking a picture irresistible.

NYK2 loves where they live - there is nothing behind them but a field, and clear skies, and she has a very good telescope to allow her to star-gaze.

Awwwww - a hedgepig! We don't seem to have any around here, but the badgers are still in the garden on a regular basis and someone told me that if you have badgers they will kill hedgehogs! I'm going off badgers...

We don't have badgers - for which our hedgehogs can, it seems, be grateful.

We have at least one local hedgehog that wanders along the front gardens in our road - the back ones have fences and walls and it is difficult for them to get far, but the front ones are more open. But I had never met one out in an early January afternoon.

So pretty and cool to see a hedgehog in it's natural habitat. They are very popular here as pets.

I had, honestly, never heard of anyone having a hedgehog as a pet until now. As I commented above to lenine2 we think of them as friends who visit the garden and eat the slugs... and have fleas that they are very willing to share if you ever manage to pick one up!

We see one occasionally in our own garden - but only ever in the dusk and not in the winter, so this one was a real surprise.

Unlike domestic rabbits, hedgehogs are not pets IMO.
