Sounds like a combination of defensiveness and no sense of humor. :/ I have that exact kind of humor, and I lose people ALL the time. Or like you, I assume they were joking, and they weren't.

Still, sense of humor or not, this person needs to get a grip. "I thought you were making a joke' is not an insult. (Well, in some cases I guess, but not this one!)
