As a former vegetarian, this woman needs to learn to read labels, argh how ridiculous to try that.

I actually did this today-- to be fair, the "bacon flavor" isn't very large or clear on the label. However, I didn't open the can, I just set it off to the side and I'll exchange it after work tomorrow. I think if I had opened it before knowing it has bacon in it, I would have just tossed it and remember next time not to get that one.

I've been a vegetarian for 7 years and I always read through the ingredient list on everything even if I think it's definitely going to be vegetarian. There could be secret beef stock or bacon or fish paste whatever that I didn't realize was there. This person should've read the list. I am still surprised they didn't accept the return, my mom has returned food if it tastes disgusting (the store just throws it away and then credits her the return). I guess it depends on how the person requests the return or the store since I think it's weird that food returns are possible even if they do throw them away.

Yeah, it really depends on the store. Our store's policy is that if we can't resell it or get credit from the merchants, we probably aren't going to do the return. We just can't afford it.

I would never think to return open food just because I didn't like it/I misread the label (I'd be annoyed at myself for wasting money though). I did return one tub of opened sour cream though, because even though I had just bought it a few days prior and just opened it up, it seemed to have gone off. I felt weird returning a perishable item, but I am not paying for rotten food!

i've returned opened tomato paste...i opened the can and there was mold. and the date was 7 MONTHS past the sell by date. turns out, the ex stocker had not been rotating the stock, but just shoving things to the back of the shelf.

that, i can see returning. same thing with strawberries there were moldy in the middle of the packaging, produce is finicky stuff.

I'm shocked that people would try to return perfectly okay food that was opened. On top of it, if someone had very specific food restrictions, you'd think they'd read an ingredient list.

If she'd missed it on a long, tiny lettered ingredient list, I might have understood, but the word "bacon" was right on the front.

She should have donated it to a food bank or something.
