On the thesis side of things

I had no idea that I was the glue that held LiveJournal together. But apparently I am. Both silver_huskey and geofflb have pledged to post more, and cited me as the reason. Maybe this is the start of a flood of users coming back to LiveJournal... nah. If you ask me, the LJ ship sailed years ago. We're now living in the age of social media, where if something ( Read more... )

"f you ask me, the LJ ship sailed years ago. We're now living in the age of social media, where if something cannot be said in 140 characters, people don't say it at all."

For those of us in the sciences, 140 characters is nothing unless you're perhaps toiling with some mathematics. Otherwise 140 words is a minimum to get any serious message conveyed. Therein, I find that who remains on LJ tends to be the more intelligent of the bunch - people who have a brain and who actually post thoughtful updates or substance.

The twitter nonsense seems to be more "Getting new dish towels at Walmart!" and "On my way home, stopping for some BK!" crap. Who really cares about what anyone else is doing in their mundane and trivial daily existence?! O_o

While I will not deny that such is the general content of Twitter, I've also found it useful in learning about events or the like which friends are attending. A friend of mine recently got 2 free tickets to the Detroit Auto Show- he didn't post about it on LJ, he didn't post about it on Facebook... not on Fah, either. Only on Twitter. I nearly took him up on it... except I hate Detroit and the traffic would've been a mess, so I opted not to go.

Anyways, my point is, you must be careful about lumping together the collective ideal of all that use such websites. I agree that most of the stuff posted therein is unimportant. But I will disagree that people using mediums other than LJ lack "a brain" or "thoughtful updates or substance". Unless you fancy such of me?

On the contrary, I've actually seen plenty of intelligence on Twitter. I've seen some crap on there, too, so you're also correct.

I realized I needed somewhere to blog. I almost did a spit take when Angela told me you were posting again. Then she told me she was posting again, so I decided to come on back. I firmly believe you have the power to save LJ, soooo good luck!

Well, I hope that my presence here does attract back a few other posters. Maybe they'll attract back some of their friends and we'll go on from there.

I'm still using LJ, myself... it's just that most of the posts I've been making are all private, now. I mostly use it as a journal for myself. It's still helpful to come check in on a few people here and there, but most of the people from here I either talk to on IM, or follow on Facebook/Twitter, etc. So I'm up-to-date via other formats. May not be the "long-winded" format we find on LJ... but I don't mind either, really. I'm an adaptable dog. ^^

So maybe someday I'll get back to posting (publicly) on here... but until then, there are plenty of others to fill the void for me. *Wags absently*

That's true. I have been pouncing you lately, so I do try to get up to date on your life, such that you tell me about it, of course. *Grins.*

Welcome Back, eh!

Sorry, I just had to tease you a little. I'm slow at using LJ, but I'm doing a little more posting. Time will tell. I spend so much time on Facebook. I'm not using Twitter as often. I'm liking your Disney movie reviews.

Thank you. I just posted another collection of my weekly links. And tomorrow, I'm doing Dumbo (wow, that sounds bad, worthy of a visit by CPS at the very least!).
