For those of us in the sciences, 140 characters is nothing unless you're perhaps toiling with some mathematics. Otherwise 140 words is a minimum to get any serious message conveyed. Therein, I find that who remains on LJ tends to be the more intelligent of the bunch - people who have a brain and who actually post thoughtful updates or substance.
The twitter nonsense seems to be more "Getting new dish towels at Walmart!" and "On my way home, stopping for some BK!" crap. Who really cares about what anyone else is doing in their mundane and trivial daily existence?! O_o

Anyways, my point is, you must be careful about lumping together the collective ideal of all that use such websites. I agree that most of the stuff posted therein is unimportant. But I will disagree that people using mediums other than LJ lack "a brain" or "thoughtful updates or substance". Unless you fancy such of me?
