Montreal isn't very close to the wilderness. If you're going for that, you could always have a sea creature rise up from the Hudson Bay and attack a village in Nunavut.
And I sometimes just get sick riding in a car. This movie is not a good idea for me (but I still might try and see it).
Can you tell geography isn't my strong point? Sea creatures are always scary and mysterious! I used to be a big fan of the Loch Ness. I think I'd go see that!
How do you know a monster hasn't attacked Topeka? When was the last time you actually saw evidence of its existence? When did you receive personal correspondence from a resident of Topeka? Food for thought.

Because as the prize jewel in the Western world's capitalist crown, New York has significantly stronger weight as a metaphor. Furthermore, it is likely the only metropolis the majority of the demographic audience would find on a map.
