Last Weekend for April 27-30: Tribe, Art Museum, Archie & the Bunkers, Platelets

M was in Columbus for the weekend visiting her mother, so I was comparatively on my own.

I started Friday night with my third baseball game of the year but my first from my season tickets. I was joined by my friend Tony (once upon a time onabus). An extremely heavy rain passed over shortly before the game, but the grounds crew was on point and everything got under way a scant 10 minutes late on what turned out to be a gorgeous evening. Browns first round draft picks Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward threw out the first pitches, and then Corey Kluber put on a pitching clinic against the Mariners. Backed up by five solo home runs (three in the first inning), Kluber cruised into the ninth inning with a comfortable 6-2 and was sent out to close it out. He got 2 outs, and then walked a runner. Out came Kluber and in came Tribe closer Cody Allen, who promptly gave up a hit and a three run home run. Fortunately, he shut down the next batter to preserve a 6-5 win Alas, we did not get an appearance from Ichiro on what will likely be his last year in the league. Aside from that, it was a great night for baseball.

On Saturday I ran a bunch of errands and worked out, then headed over to the Cleveland Museum of Art to see all the current exhibitions. It was the first time I'd been to the museum to see art this year so there were quite a few for me to work though. As it turns out, although I did like some of the German Expressionism prints, none of the four exhibitions I reviewed particularly blew me away, but I did get to see an interesting performance art piece in the contemporary galleries. The museum recently acquired a piece (or the rights to a piece?) called Name Announcement, wherein a tuxedoed attendant politely asks your name as you enter the gallery, and then announces it to the entire room in the manner of a medieval herald. Everyone seemed to get a kick out of it, and it was certainly out the ordinary for the museum. The performance will continue Saturdays and Sundays through September.

Afterwards I went to the Print Room, ostensibly to see the new exhibition that just opened but really more to see my friends Shari and Helen.

Saturday night I attended the Archie & the Bunkers album release party at Mahall's, as previously noted.

Sunday morning I donated platelets for the sixth time this year. At this rate, I'm on pace to set a single year record. The soul/R&B portion of my show was entirely vinyl, and almost exclusively bands I hadn't heard of before. I generated the list by scouring the internet for bands that were compared to the Ohio Players. That worked pretty well, and I may try it with some other bands in the future.

I also got a lot of reading done over the weekend. I knocked off the second and third books of the Penric series by Bujold that I started last weekend. Both Penric and the Shaman and Penric's Mission were to my taste, and I am now eagerly awaiting the arrival of the fourth book via library loan. I also read another book I got at Ferrett's Oscar Party. This one was about olive oil, and is called Extra Virginity. Unfortunately, it felt very brief given the potential scope of the subject matter, and was not particularly well written. I can only recommend it to people who are deeply interested in the topic.
