As I've
noted previously, Birdie has three different "cribs" that she lay in - a pack & play in our bedroom, another downstairs in the living room, and an actual crib in her own room. Each had a way to adjust how high the horizontal surface she was lying on was mounted. Naturally, when she was small and immobile, this surface was mounted higher up to make her easier to reach. This made the rails around her comparatively shorter, but since she couldn't move very much it didn't matter.
Once
she started hauling herself into a seated position, it was only a matter of time before she began trying to haul herself up higher. She can't quite stand, but she can certainly kneel and it's clear that standing is coming along soon. More to the point, she can now grab on to the top of the pack and plays and the crib and try to haul herself up.
Just before we took Birdie to
visit my parents, we moved her down to the ground level in both pack and plays. Or more accurately, we moved her down to ground level in the living room pack and play and put the upstairs pack and play away altogether. We retain it for travel purposes (it went to my parents house) but since Birdie has been
sleeping in her crib since August we didn't really need it on a day to day basis any longer. The next step was lowering the crib. That was a little more complicated since it required actual tools, but M took care of that this past Wednesday. She may haul herself upright, but she won't be able to get out for a while yet.
Speaking of the crib, it is positioned by the door of Birdie's room, and if she looks out from one end of it she can see through the doorway and across the hallway into the bathroom door. In the mornings I put her in the crib while I take a shower. If I open the bathroom door when I'm shaving, Birdie is pretty much always positioned at the end of the crib watching me. She's always got a look on her face of "oh good, you're still here" which is pretty adorable.
