One of my personal minor problems is that there are so many books out there that I want to read that even if I somehow attained a pace of one book a day it would certainly take far more than a year to read just the books on my slush pile right now today. Depending on whether you count my updated baseball stats back in October, this is either my fifth or sixth 2023 year in review post. Either way, I saved the longest and most complicated list for last. In 2018 I read 101 books. This was my first foray into triple digits since 2014 when I read 100 on the nose and the most since I read 116 in 2009. Of those 101 books, 75 were prose, 25 were graphic novels, and 1 was a poetry collection.

This year I read 48 prose books and 32 graphic novels, with one poetry collection thrown in for good measure, for 81 in total. That's up substantially from last year's 68, but most of that growth came in comics. I actually read fewer prose novels than last year, and far more comics. This year I read 59 prose books and 9 graphic novels, for 68 in total. That's the most prose novels since 2010 and the fewest graphic novels since 2011. I didn't finish this year's poetry collection, which led to some ambiguousness about whether I should continue reading the Economist. As you might have gathered from the quote I lead off one of my recent concert calendars with, I recently read The Merchant of Venice. This play is like Batman in that the main characters are a little boring, but the villain is awesome.
