TV update and some unpopular fannish opinions

Feb 07, 2011 13:45

So far, 2011 is my year of dissertation stuff and catching up on old television, now that I'm out of Downton Abbey. I'm working my way through Wonderfalls (which I watched when it aired, but I was always too busy teaching to watch our DVDs), and rewatching Homicide: Life on the Street. My husband is into BSG, and I am not, which leads me to the ( Read more... )

I prefer my sci-fi that way, too, although BSG, when it was good, was just so damn good. I can go for straight drama when it's that good. But yeah, it was spotty and frustrating and ended - not so much badly, as WTF-ly - and if you do ever choose to watch it, I recommend mainlining it so the bad parts aren't as annoying, and turning off the last episode about five minutes from the end.

The first season is pretty much my platonic ideal of a straight SF drama, though. You could always just watch the mini and the first season and pretend it was tragically canceled afterward, never to realize its full potential. That last part is true anyway. *g*

Yeah, I think that may be part of my increased cranky. I watched most of Season 1, and when they aren't ratcheting up the tension to "Kobol's Last Gleaming" levels, I get more annoyed by the characters I dislike and also by the theology.

And I did have massive amusement from my husband having no idea that Michelle Forbes was not only on Homicide, but also popular for her Star Trek work.

(Oh, and he just started watching Farscape, too, so I had to explain Save Farscape over dinner the other day).

I feel much the same way about BSG. M. is trying to get me to watch it - he loves it and owns all the DVDs. I just find it *too* hideously depressing past the first season. I need there to be something that tells me that my own life isn't all insanity and doom and gloom, not something that reinforces that feeling!

You've just brought me to my working theory that BSG is just not compulsively watchable if you're a grad student in the humanities, because the gloom just weighs you down too much. (My husband is a physics grad student, but has always been into anything with Killer Robots, so of course he's all over the Cylon thing).

Heh, at time of writing I thought I'd be going further, but as it turns out, the only spoilers are through Season 3 (which I think you're through). So you're totally safe!

Also, *BIG HUGS* to you re: the months of wedding stuff and how already complicated parent relationships become more so in that context.

This is the husband. I agree that the Bill Adama-Laura Roslin-Saul and Ellen Tigh happy hour is the best part of the series. The crazy Cylon v. Human theology is a little much. There could probably be some better Asimov or Philip K. Dick homages.

However, the show manages to do several things that appeal to me:
1. Killer robots
2. Tricia Helfer as a sexy killer robot
3. Shit blowing up
4. Space ships
5. The meta-references to the original BSG
6. My wife's snarky comments while I'm watching

Also, as I'm watching old sci-fi shows (my wife mentioned Farscape; I've also started SG1 and Babylon 5), I'm realizing that I want to see more physically accurate space battles. But, then again, I'm a physicist, so I'll be complaining about this forever.
