We had it spring to life again yesterday. I was barely in time to stop it and it burned 30 yards into our garden (about 60 yards to the house - huge garden). Then this evening again. We have a hot windy day forecast tomorrow and then possibly rain the next day....

I'm, I guess, not much of a sport hunter or fisher. Not that don't enjoy doing both... but as an Ichthyologist friend of mine and I were saying last night, we've got to have a reason beyond 'it's fun.' 'It's dinner' is good one. Books, life, the beasties... had a shrew in the kitchen last night - possibly an escapee from the cats or just wandered in to keep warm. I don't give the little fella a big chance of survival - he's found a crack too small for cats, for now. I rather like shrews, but I don't think B - or Australian customs would feel the same way ;-). B for some reason ended up with really vicious cramps/pain (not the usual gastro kind either) the night before last. After about 15 minutes when I was seriously contemplating trying to get her a hospital, it eased off. Seems fine today. Wonder if it was kidney stones or a very sudden ulcer problem... anyway, yesterday was definitely an excercise ( Read more... )

Barbs smelled smoke last night at about 12 and as this is fire season, and our neighbour had burned off the field below us, got up and had a look.

I find myself stuck in a depressing conundrum that I see no easy answers to. We have our visas - as yet we have no buyer for the house... And the hard part. The currency has strengthened some more and the cost of moving my animals - with the six month quarantine has ballooned to R150 000 - about 4 times our fare!
