Today was a full on immersion into the inner workings of Japanese bureaucracy. On the docket for today was picking up our paychecks, setting up our bank accounts, and getting a cell phone, which all together should have easily been finished by lunchtime. What a long ass fucking day. So today was Saitama orientation and my first time using the JR trains. They're actually pretty easy to manage once you figure out how the lines work and how to switch trains which Jason thankfully helped me out with. WTF?! So they WERE earthquakes! Both of them at the same exact time Saturday and Sunday night. I was confused when Endo-sensei (one of the English teachers at Minami Chu) asked me Monday morning if I was ok during the earthquakes, and I thought "well maybe she lives in my building and can hear my neighbors too". Yeahhhhh....so tonight I discovered that what at first appeared to be an earthquake is really just my neighbors having sex. The slow, gentle shaking that lasts for about 30 seconds happened again tonight at exactly the same time, but this time I was awake and lucid so I could coherently figure out what it was. Japan doesn't miss a beat! I've been here exactly a week and all sorts of crazy shit has happened, but last night I got my first earthquake. I'd just fallen asleep, and it woke me up so that made it even scarier.
