Two days later, the hunters returned to the camp later than advertised to the annoyance of their wives, girlfriends and significant others. Nobody actually told Jared this explicitly but Poppa Ackles had brought his wife a bunch of flowers. Jared was wondering if they'd have to leave camp for the fight, but the hunters were soon forgiven when the camp saw the size of the load that they had brought back. Wild deer and enough supplies to last weeks. Wild horses pranced and whinnied in place as they were herded into makeshift pens for breaking later. There was more than enough to keep the family in meat for quite a while. Momma found her husband and hugged him firmly.
With a laugh, she threw out the words that everyone wanted to hear, "Bring out the booze, everyone, tonight we're gonna party!"
Whoops and hollers went up at the proclamation and suddenly, everyone was busy. Even Jared and Megan were dragged into the preparations, putting out benches and general go-for-ing, which translated as 'doing what Momma Ackles told them to do'. They laughed and bitched as they moved the heavy furniture around, and Jared was half-certain he'd pulled a muscle. Jensen cuffed him lightly across the back of his head and promised to kiss it better later. From what he and Meg were saying, this wasn't like anything they'd ever had to for their family's parties but they couldn't have been happier. In the Padalecki household, everything was strict, regimented and on time. The thought of having an unscheduled cook-out would have dropped Jared's mom where she stood, or so Megan declared when Mac asked.
The food was awesome and there was plenty of it, but Jared only took seconds and retreated to sit slightly apart from everyone barring himself and Josh. It looked to Jensen that the whole thing was starting to hit home. Jensen had been there, first time dirt-side after his tour and he'd spent a week trying not to night drowning his nightmares in the bar like his Uncle Karl had. He was betting that Jared had no way to deal with it, so instead of talking about it, he sat there and forced himself to laugh and smile at the antics of the group. It was a little into the folk music and dancing when Jared got to his feet and walked away. Jensen followed him as he walked out to the camp boundary. He watched the other man stop, leaning against the bonnet of a run down jeep.
“You okay?” Jensen asked, leaning back against one of the side panels but keeping far enough away to give the impression of space.
“Yeah, it’s just…” Jared started, “… Your family is so different.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I love my family. Loved, Christ, three months and I still think they'll be ringing any minute to know what I'm doing.” He took a deep breath.
Jensen didn’t push him; just let him take his own sweet time. It sounded like he had something to get out of his system and Jensen would stay here until he’d unburdened himself.
“Gerald Padalecki was a very good businessman and an average father. He fitted parenting around board meetings and salary reviews." Jared pushed his food away and started scuffing at the dirt." I guess you could say that we got neatly allotted parcels of affection redeemable between six thirty and seven thirty in the morning and after ten in the evening. That might be a little unfair. He came to my little league matches if they were on a weekend and Meg’s ballet recitals. Mom was better but she was always at some sort of social event. Never saw Jeff, he was off being a 'good son' and meeting people and networking. We got raised by JD and Sam really, me and Meg, but part of that was they were getting paid for it,” he huffed a laugh. “Went through this whole rebellion thing when I hit thirteen, threw a tantrum bigger than Texas. But it was JD who turned me around and tanned my hide. Well, he gave me a hiding and then Sam gave me cookies to take the hurt out of it. Never realized until then that I had a proper family, but I guess I still needed Gerald to take notice of me. He died thinking that I hated him, but I didn’t.”
“Jared, it’s…” Jensen started but Jared held up a hand.
“Naw, I don’t need you to tell me that he loved me, I know that. It was in his own way but he did. I understand that. Took me a while but I got there." Jared turned to look at him, eyes wet but clear. "But then coming here and seeing the welcome that you got. Hell, even the welcome that your Mom gave to me and Meg. She took us in without a second’s hesitation and now we’re almost part of the family around here,” he smiled. “Gerald would have run background checks, had JD looking into their family, friends, drug habits. But your mom just hugged us, looked us up and down and served us up with a high class meal.”
“A proper southern fry ain’t exactly high class,” Jensen said gruffly, looking back out over the camp.
“Either way it was good." He paused, reaching out to wrap an arm around Jensen's shoulder. “Your family is amazing, Jen. But it’s a little… overwhelming… especially when you come from such a different place.”
Jensen didn’t know what to say so he pulled back a little, “You want me to ask them to back off, give you a little space?”
“Nah, I like it, really…” Jared sidled closer to Jensen, leaning into him and breathing warm air against his neck. “Just makes me realize what I missed out on growing up. Doesn’t help that I've got no idea if JD is still back there or if the explosion killed him, ya know? I tried calling him earlier, just to tell him we’re safe but there was nothing.”
Jensen nodded, “Yeah, I guess. I miss my family when I’m gone but I know that if anything happens they’ll up sticks and move to wherever I am, or I’ll have someone in the city. When I crossed Kane, I went and hung with Josh.”
Jared smiled, "It's good to have family."
A silence fell between the two men, but it was comfortable.
“Ya know…” Jared said, thoughtfully, “I always thought that being a mercenary was like the TV-Sims, incredibly glamorous. Fast cars, fast women, guns bigger than your head. But you're possibly the most down to Earth guy that I've met. It's hard to believe that you're part of all that."
“Can’t lie to you, man. There are plenty of fast cars. And the other guy will probably be firing at you with something bigger than you could ever imagine,” Jensen considered for a second. “Dunno about the fast women though, never really looked for them, but it doesn't have a patch on just heading home and curling up on the sofa with a cold beer and the TV remote and having someone there with you."
Jared looked at Jensen and smiled, "And now we got that."
Jensen smiled, "Sure do, and for as long as you want it!"
Jared moved closer, pulling Jensen into a hug. Staring down into green eyes, he smiled, “I think that’s the best offer anyone’s ever made me!”
