The Discworld is a Matriarchial Society

[to family]

Since I don't think we're expecting any more new arrivals, I suggest we begin establishing some ground rules for us all to follow.  A tight ship is a happy ship.  For those of you less apt to picking up on this sort of thing, that's code for 'assigning chores', but there are other things that might bear discussing.  If we're going to ( Read more... )

[Susan's voice comes out surprisingly high as she whirls around.]

Oh, really? Is something the matter, Nina?

[If she doesn't acknowledge the sack, no one will notice. That is how things work.]

Oh, not at all.

[Bizarrely chipper for Susan, but no, no time is better.]

Did you want to discuss that woman -- what was it... Samantha, then?

[Pinkie Pie cheerfully comes home, a bunch of bright pink, yellow, purple, magenta, and other hideous shades of flowery dresses slung over her back. Bouncing into the house, she calls out happily.]

I found these really pretty free clothes!!

Ooh, when's the meeting again?

[If Susan were an anime character, that vein would be twitching pretty darn hard. Settle for rapid hair rearrangement instead.]

Of course you did. You... You can just keep them in the basement, then.

And it's seven.

[Pinkie, as always, remains oblivious to anything but an atmosphere of good cheer.] I wonder why someone would leave this stuff lying around? I'm gonna wear one to the meeting tonight! [she speaks of the meeting as if it's an exciting party and not the distribution of chores.]

...I'm sure there was a perfectly good reason.

And I don't quite think you'll fit, Pinkie Pie. You'd need arms, for one thing. And a much smaller head.

[Luke's no stranger to doing chores, but every since the whole droning incident he's felt more uncomfortable around here then usual.

He's having some difficulty adjusting to his new "life" in Mayfield. The fight he witnessed between the Major and Annie brought up even more questions then before. It was enough to make him want to tear his hair out.]

What's this meeting about?

Anything, really. You and Pinkie Pie have some questions to ask, I'm sure, and the rest of us can bicker like we usually do.

Mm right, I suppose so...

[He does have questions, a lot of them in fact. But he's a little too distracted right now to think clearly enough to ask them.

Everything's felt so surreal that he can't help but wonder if he's stuck in a dream somehow.]

[Susan is accustomed enough to working with children to note the woolly quality of his voice.]

I told you when you got here that you'd be accustomed to it, soon. Give it some time.

Carrying a body around in broad daylight isn't very inconspicuous, you know.

[which is just his way of saying hello and asking what the hell she's toting around, since he is fairly certain Susan isn't the dragging-around-bodies type]

My Grandfather disposes of the souls. I clean up the bodies for him.

[Whumph. The sack goes on the ground because despite being stronger than she appears, the drone had bought an inordinate number of these disgusting things.]

How do you do, Charles?

That sounds like an efficient system. [wow that does sound pretty heavy but not at all body-ish. he leans forward a tiny bit to peak at the items inside before replying.]

Quite well, thank you, recent holiday rubbish aside. I hope you're faring decently yourself.

Recent holiday rubbish - precisely what I'm disposing of. Apart from sudden inexplicable gravitations towards pink, I've been well.

Do we have to?

Have you ever had optional homework assigned?

... Maybe?

Books are stupid and Communism is just in James Bond movies. I have shit to do this summer! Shit that doesn't involve reading! Shit like Dragnet!

I understood the degree of importance after the first needless profanity, Miss Goldstein. What, pray tell, is Dragnet?
