I lucked into my first programming job and eventually got promoted because I was too stubborn to quit and more motivated than anyone else. I have been employed as a programmer for almost ten years now, but all of my work experience is in a weird proprietary language and healthcare interface writing. I found out about it as it was launching for this year and really didn't have time to get the whole manuscript ready, but I got through the pitch round and that made me happy :)
