Dear Dipshit Professor,

Calling someone out in class for opening an email with "Hello," instead of "Dear Dipshit Professor," is not only childish, but more importantly doesn't fucking matter. Are we a couple? Are you my dear sweet grandmother? Cherished sibling? Long time friend? No. Why the fuck would I write "Dear Dipshit Professor," then? DIAF ( Read more... )

The professor in my Smith class calls me Mr. Cookman even though I've told him three separate times to call me by my first name. I call professors by their first names regardless of what they tell me to call them. If he insists on calling you by a foolish title, you should request "Episkopos," thereby denoting your position in the Legion of Dynamic Discord.

Frowny face exclamation point! Respect your profs, Alex!

a) Referring to someone by a silly, aggrandizing title ≠ respect.

b) I give respect to people who earn it. It's not something I go handing out to every chump who had the money and connections to get a fancy degree.

c) The phrase "legitimate authority" gives me hives.

Do you also refuse to acknowledge any grade or evaluation a professor gives you, because they have no authority and who the hell are they to evaluate you, anyway?

I would think by choosing to take someone's class, you are entering into a social contract with them wherein you put yourself under their authority. The title just explain your relationships. Both professor and student should treat each other with respect. It would be disrespectful, for instance, for a professor to call a student by an overly-familiar nickname (unless their relationship allows for this, as it might allow for first-name-calling) or refusing to call them by their actual name entirely (preferring a made-up one), regardless of whether the prof thinks that, say, names are arbitrary and constrictive branding markers.
