This reminds me of the story of several Bostonians inviting me to a "barbecue"--you know, where they were going to grill hamburgers and hot dogs--and me tediously explaining that that involves high heat for little time rather than low heat for long time. And you don't barbecue on a grill. You grill on a grill.
"OK," someone said, "What do you barbecue on?"
I didn't have a firm answer. Later I asked la_chispa the same question: what do you call the thing you barbecue on? After looking puzzled for a second, she said, "An oil drum?"

"'Cooking food with fire'? Why don't you just say 'barbecue', like a normal person?"
"...because I've known enough Texans to know that I don't 'barbecue'."
(And because "grilling" just sounds too suburban to me...)
