The Anti-Schmoopy Zone

The other night I was reminded *once again* that most artificial and trivial of 'holidays' is near - "Valentine's Day" or VD. I briefly spied an animated VD special in the form of a Peanuts cartoon in which good old Charlie Brown once again gets the shaft. It brought back those harsh elementary school memories of just what a ( Read more... )

Like you, I hate Hallmark hollidays. The holliday it is based on is fine.

Well put, dear Doctor.

valentine's day used to be a huge deal for me...largely because whatever jerk I was with didn't treat me well and I was hoping for ONE DAY. Now, while I wish I could have given Kent his gift (a chef's knife and a knife roll that I made for him) before he had to hightail it out of here, it isn't the end of the world.

February 14= a good excuse to spend a little discretionary income and sit at home all day wearing very little with the flogger hanging from the bedpost. ;)

Well, I was a geek version of Charlie Brown throughout much of my school days. VD was a pure popularity contest and it was a competition (in elementary school esp.) to have the "most stupid cards".

Later on I would learn that 1) going out on VD with your SO was a BAD idea and 2)that one shouldn't be prompted by Hallmark to show your affection.

I was that kid, too.

Except for 3rd grade. It was always a huge thing if you got a "real" card instead of one that could be bought in a box for 99 cents.

It was huge. It was showy. Very Victorian-inspired and clearly from Hallmark.

And it was from my best guy friend with the note "Happy day before cheap candy day! Don't tell anyone....we'll just confuse them!!!!"

We graduated from showy Valentine cards to silly Xmas gifts (we've bought each other cartoon boxer shorts and argyle socks for the last 20 years).
And I got my Hallmark valentine saturday.

So some good can come of this day.
Although i'm still waiting to get whipped...

You know, that's one of the other things that bugs me about St. Valentine's Day. "Buy your SO Valentine candy to show how much you love her!" Then ... why is 98% of Valentine candy such complete and utter crap? I mean, most of that shit makes Hersheys look good. And that's not easy.

I wholeheartedly agree. If you need a single day on a calendar elevated to some near-holy status to remind you that you should express affection to your SO - you are seriously f**ked up! Personally, I try to never let a day go by that she doesn't know what she means to me.

On the other hand, Lupercalia does indeed sound like a holiday well worth the time.

I like Valentine's day. Hallmark did not invent it or hardly any of the "Hallmark Holidays" they merely capitalized on it. That's what businesses do. It's named after a saint who went against the church to marry people. I think that's sweet ( ... )
