Although your explanation fits, I like to imagine he's trying to do situps and she's trying to stop him (even though she knows damn well she should be making him dinner and knitting him something to wear immediately afterwards, if not during).

maybe she is into the beer gut look and is desperately trying to stop his attempt to get into shape. Even though she knows that she should be warming his socks and drawing him a bath filled with hookers.
