Word. I might need to make a similar announcement myself.

You should. I have a feeling a lot of people haven't heard yet, and the more angry comments lj gets, the more likely they are to rescind or modify the policy.

Wait... you don't even have to be friends with someone to cross-post your comments... I could cross-post comments on enemy's entries that were bitching about some mutual acquaintance. *head in hands* The possibilities for misuse are endless.

Why would anyone want to cross-post comments anyway!! Entries I understand, but what on earth is the purpose of enabling people to post random, out-of-context comments to journal entries that are not even theirs to their Facebook? What interest can that possibly hold to people not already reading their LJs? x X

This "connect all your social networks!!" bull has really gotten out of control. Don't people realize that we might use these websites for different things.

Seriously! My second reaction, after "I don't believe this", was "...why??" and "are we too lazy to copy and paste now?"

I think people smell money and they forget that compartmentalization is very important. There was a good NY Times magazine article on this a month or so ago. (Which featured the story of a girl whose offer of employment by a school was revoked because there was a picture of her wearing a pirate hat with the caption "drunken pirate" on facebook, which apparently promotes underage drinking.)

You know, you could have posted this comment to facebook, and all your real-life friends would be confused and disinterested.

In response to your post, I have disconnect all the cross-posting functions on my LJ options already.

The recent LJ changes are not that threatening to me (for the time being) because LJ is not popular in HK, where most of my friends stay.

However, I do have security problems with my webshot accounts. I have to maintain two separate webshot accounts so as to prevent my church's brothers and sisters to see my moe photos in the other webshot account. orz

I'm glad it alerted you. I took the opportunity to go over all my settings, as well.

Some people like to keep seperate parts of their identity separate online. I wish the companies wouldn't make it so hard for us.

I also don't want my next employer to turn me down when I change job just because they find something they don't want to see in my LJ or Facebook. Even though I tried to write in different languages to protect my privacy, (My Japanese journals are intended for my on-line friends only, because 99.99% of my real life friends don't read Japanese. My Chinese journals are intended for my real-life friends only, while my English journals are intended for all.) I'm still afraid that someday someone may know how to "decode" my secrets. :P

I read in a recent TV news that some banks and companies are now offering free software for people to download to their mobile phone, but the software contain very "secret" clauses that require the users to SHARE their phone calender, friends' emails, etc to the companies. It becomes more and more difficult to protect privacy nowadays.

Yeah, it's impossible to control for what languages someone in human resources may be able to read. A lot of my friends, especially teachers, have been changing their names on facebook to their first and middle name so that it's harder for schools, students, and parents to find them. I'm thinking of altering my name too.

Even worse are the location-sharing devices! If you enable them, they broadcast your physical location to your friends and/or other people using the same device in the area. Can we say dangerous?

I just checked my settings and realized to my horror that I had it allowing people to search and find this account by my email address.

I just had a similar problem with youtube. I wanted to create a new youtube account so that people can't find it by just knowing my gmail, but youtube is completely controlled by google. I entered a different email address (say ndwarf64@here.com) for my new youtube account, and it set up a gmail account: ndwarf64@here.com@gmail.com

I thought I just accidentally typed my email where it said what do you want your google account to be, but I relooked and I didn't.

Me too. I changed that setting immediately. It wasn't a big deal when I was still using kioku_soshitsu/hotmail, but now that my email is my actual name...

I check my facebook settings at least once a month to make sure I haven't missed any new changes, but come to think of it I haven't checked my lj settings in years... Lesson learned.

That youtube story is ridiculous. I can't believe they wouldn't let you use a different email provider.
