Cool stuff at the Belarusian Grocery store
Buying stuff by myself was a major feat when I first got here, but now I'm a regular shopper. Occasionally the checker will ask me a question, which I usually can't understand and thus tends to gum up the works, but for the most part it's not bad at all.

What I can see from my window in Belarus
As happens in most parts of the world, people that don't have much need to be creative. For instance, if you have a rug, but no vacum cleaner, what's the best way to clean it? You can take it outside and beat it with a stick, but that's pretty dusty. Or, you can do this:

Applied Economics and the Kreeses
It may not be that interesting to anyone else, but since I've got a degree in economics, and have taught econ for a HS competition team for 8 years, getting to see all my lessons in action is incredibly interesting. If you're not interested, at least count your blessings for living in a stable economy (even if it doesn't currently seem like it).

A frigid vacation
Just got back from a great trip through the Baltics. Four countries in 4 days is not good for your health or sleep, particularly when its bitter cold (who the hell goes further north for a holiday??) but it was good all around.

I'm on my third trip to Eastern Europe (Belarus mostly), and this time I'm going to try to keep a semblance of a blog.
Life in this part of the world has been exceptionally difficult since WWII. First the Germans took over, then the Russians, and neither brought anything positive. I didn't know much at all about what really went on here, ( Read more... ) -
Small town kids
I'm distantly related to a celebrity (at least he's a celebrity this week). UNLV beat #2 Seed Wisconsin to move to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament yesterday. My biggest pet peeve right now: People who can't ask a simple question without stretching it out into a lengthy speech. For God's sake, just ask the damn question, don't prattle on just so you can tell us your opinion, the answers you expect them to give, or some completely useless story about your cat or your cousin's nasty ( Read more... )
