A few nights later…
Jessica is sitting on a swing at a park near her dorm, rocking gently as she looks in the night sky. They decide to meet again during nights. Onew was the one who suggested it. Her white vest parka is slipping from her arms. Maybe she should have worn a different outfit? After all pink hoodies and gray jogging pants are too thin for cold October nights. Her hands are freezing; exposed too much. He must have forgotten that he is making her wait out in a cold night. It makes her slightly irritated.
He arrives though and soon her annoyance disappears. His copper hair is disheveled, sweats on his temples, and his breathing uneven. He is also wearing a hoodie under a black Torero Down and a set of jeans. He takes the seat on the other swing beside her.
“Sorry I’m late. I had to wait till everyone was asleep.” He says, peering at her. She doesn’t reply but instead sniffs instead. He notices the red color on her nose and pale lips.
“You’ve been waiting that long?”
She glares at him then smirks when she sees how apologetic he was. He pouts, makes a face and stops when she doesn’t laugh. She gazes up again.
She doesn’t see much. Just a plain indigo night with no sign of the moon or even the stars. “No moon tonight, huh?” She says, sighs and stops winging. Her big brown beautiful eyes search for the moon, even though she knows it is covered by clouds.
He looks up, also searching, then goes back to study her face. She’s unusually calm and controlled. Most times she would be expressionless. Something must be up, he thought.
“Are you okay?” He asks, stands up, goes to the railings across her and leans his body there, arms crossed. She faces him eye-to-eye, furrows her brows and eyes him weirdly.
“Of course I am. Why wouldn’t be I?”
Onew scratches his head and smiles awkwardly. “Well, for one, the moon isn’t out and two… you seem different?” The last part is more of a question than a statement. Probably because he’s too nervous to think of a better word for her oddness.
Jessica chuckles wistfully, covering her mouth with one hand while the other holds the chain of the swing for support. What a silly boy.
He is abashed by her reaction. She sits there, laughing so much, trying not to fall off the swing.
“What? You think I’m obsessed with moon? I don’t need it.” Not anymore.
It’s true though. She is different. She feels different. She doesn’t look stressed or pressured, the members commented the other day. She’s always smiling and pleased everywhere she goes. She just can’t help feeling cheerful.
It’s all because of him.
She finally stops giggling when tears start to fall out of her eyes. It has been too much for her. Onew rushes towards her, wiping the tears away. He asks anxiously. “Hey now, what’re you crying for?”
What is she crying for? She wonders that too. Happiness maybe? Happiness that she found him - no - that he found her that night. That he knows her feelings and he understands. Too overwhelming. Too delighted being with him.
She sniffs and smiles sheepishly. “I think I overdid it.”
“Babo.” He whispers, touching the tip of her red nose. Their faces are too close, foreheads bumping to one another. “Come on. You may get sick and we know that’s going to be a lot of trouble for them. I’ll walk you home.”
“Okay.” She grabs his offering hand and stand up. They hold each other’s gazes, both smiling, and he takes her hand with a heartfelt confession. Hand in hand, they head back, thinking it will all end well.
