He's been long gone for months, if not years, but every so often, a little spark of the old Nate comes slipping back in to haunt him: a word or a phrase here, a completely inappropriate response to a job there. Generally, it wasn't that big of a deal, as some might say, unless it was.

Usually, it has something to do with Sam. The old Nate had strong and often violent reactions to someone bringing up his dead young son. He is finding that those feelings and reactions remain, no matter what. He in fact has fond memories of threatening to punch someone in the neck nearly a dozen times for being so obviously manipulative with the dead boy's name. And, oh, the old Nate seems to love to come out around Maggie. As he sees it, though, Maggie is part and parcel of Sam. That part is easy. It makes sense.

It's this ragtag team and how it makes him sometimes feel like the old Nate. That is what bothers him. This team of... miscreants... of sinners... They have brought out feelings he associates with the old Nathan Ford.

There is pride when he sees how far Eliot Spencer will go to protect the others. There is amusement when Parker says something so completely off the wall that even he has to stop and think to understand it. There is terror when Alec Hardison manages to oversell his grifter game to a group of Russian mobsters. There is lust when Sophie Devereaux turns her head a certain way or her face eases into a certain smile. There is even exasperation at Tara and how well she conned all of them, even him.

But beyond all of that, there is a faint apprehension. After all, he supposed to be the straight arrow here. The old Nathan Ford would have been. But him, he is running a game on all of them. He is playing a role in front of them more skillfully than even Sophie ever could on her best day.

After all, he is pretending to be Nathan Ford. He has been since Sam's funeral. He's not Nathan Ford, though.

His name... is Nathaniel.
