back on track!

With grim determination not to miss any more long runs, I went to the track today. My original intention was 10-12 miles, but I decided once I got there that I should only do 8. After all, I'm still getting back in the swing of things and even 8 miles is a bit of a big increment from last week's "long" run of 6 ( Read more... )

Rock on! ^_^

Well, run on, rather, though this isn't technically a run-on sentence. XD

And now we stop the bad jokes. =P

Careful. You might not feel it the first time around but you take too many steps at a time, you're gonna feel some strap of muscle sing the season-ending twang of laceration.

That's why I only bumped up from 6 to 8 miles. I've done 8-10 several times before and didn't feel that 8 was a huge stretch from 6. I took my pace slow and in fact didn't even make note of my pace until I grabbed my calculator at the end to figure it out...I just concentrated on running at a pace that felt comfortable, and it ended up being an improvement. Using the inhaler really, really helped.

I know they're not cheap so it's not like you can buy 6 different brands of running shoes to see if there's one that's best for you, but you definitely might want to try a different brand the next time you need a pair. Actually, some shoe stores will let you return them if you have issues like this. It's amazing how some brands are crap for one person but perfect for another.

I had a pair of New Balance 1221s that I used for way longer than I should have, and I've got 1222s now. Once I figured out that I was tying the laces way too tight, they've been nothing but absolutely dreamy pillows on my feet. You deserve that kind of awesomeness.

That's the nice thing about Marathon Sports...as long as you wear them just indoors, you can exchange. I wore my first pair (Adistars) outside so I had to buy a second pair (my current Sauconys) but I'm planning on heading over there tomorrow during lunch to exchange the Sauconys and try yet a third brand. Argh.

That's totally awesome. Well, except for the blisters. Awesome and awe-inspiring.

How long do you spend running in a given session, usually?

My short runs (2-3x weekly) are typically 4 miles, though until I get back fully into the swing of things I'm aiming for just 3 miles now.

The long runs go according to this schedule. I really like the program a lot...his focus is on running injury-free, and he makes heavy use of the run/walk, which makes a marathon more accessible to everyone. He also is a strong advocate of the idea that frequent walk breaks from the beginning -- BEFORE you feel you need them -- improve your overall time because you don't expend all your resources too early.

It's hard to do hills right now since I'm indoors on a track and I'm probably unreasonably scared of slipping on the ice because I'm such a klutz about that, but come spring thaw I'll be back on pavement.
