I dated a dude for many years while in my twenties whose mom was a third grade teacher and she had MAJOR ISSUES with allowing creative spelling, and it was very much encouraged in the lower grades of her school district. She said it led to the kids pronouncing the words wrong and not identifying related words, and that they essentially had to ( Read more... )

I don't remember not being able to read, but I do remember watching Letter People and seeing how the catching game made sense. Oh and in kindergarten I remember seeing my name written out and thinking how in the fuck do all those letters spell Kimmi, and why is it so much longer than say, Chad? They were writing out Kimberly.
I sound things out. I totally don't understand how to learn any other way.

Creative spelling is a total load of bullshit and I wish I'd never heard of it before. Why even require them to learn then? Just fucking let them sit at home and play video games if you're not going to actually teach them anything.

Having a uniform pronunciation can only lead to understanding: and schools can't have that.

i learned to read at a little over 2 b/c my mother used books as the way to give herself some peace. she was pregnant with my sister. i was proficient by 3 b/c by then Keri was born. LOL!

i don't remember much except they kept wanting to skip me grades, every report card was "so bright, talks too much, needs to focus" because i was BOOOOOORED.

my mom fostered my love of words. she took me to the library frequently and never put limits on what i could read and when. i think that's why i was much more advanced than most of my classmates. she did homework with me until jr. high.

i think the key is discipline and consistency. you have to hammer at it with kids til they fucking GET it. most teachers don't have the time for that, they are too busy PARENTING.

Correct spelling should be taught as soon as any sort of writing is taught. As someone who's taught English Composition to hundreds of college students, I cringe at the writings of those who spell phonetically, and in some cases have been encouraged to do so.

FYI, I clicked over here after noticing your comment at a post of some mutual LJ friend.

Sure. It's cold here in Pittsburgh, so I need the Chapstick, used or not.

I, too, post fairly often, most recently a great deal about a predatory, evil neighbor.
