Have you read Lisanne Norman's series of books? (Sholan Alliance Novels) the first book is called Turning Point and there are at least six books out right now.

I haven't. I'll have to check the Library... I love it when I find good readable books in a series so there's plenty look forward to.

well, I guess it depends how you define good... but I think so :)

it was the combination of the two that got me - most good fiction (like the stuff which i've read on others' lists in this post) isn't really escapist to me, and true escapist fiction, at least by my definition, tends to be pulpy.

i just started small island by Andrea Levy. it's good so far (3 chapters in). It's about Carribean immigrants and race/class generally in 1940s-1950s England.

I'm bummed you're not coming to India, but it makes sense not to. I hope you get to take a trip at some point soon. AM headed on a 10-plane-ride journey to Canada to get a new visa and then get back to DElhi as soon as possible. yikes.

Good look with getting the Visa... what a long ass trip (and probably expensive) for a little piece of paper.

Although it's less likely that I will come to India this winter, who knows... maybe I will get impulsive and come at the last-minute.

queer feminist scifi of color: nalo hopkinson's books, esp brown girl in the ring and midnight robber and skin folks - but I love her latest, The Salt roads, too...
plot driven fiction: purple hibiscus, chimamanda nozi adiche
queen of dreams , chitra divakaruni
brick lane , monica ali
the white boy shuffle, paul beatty

I'm also loving Evelyn Whit'e bio of Alice Walker.

I just read Midnight Robber and really liked it, I'm looking forward to reading more of her stuff. Salt Roads is an anthology of short sci-fi by authors of color, isn't it? Thanks for the other recommendations, I will put them on my list.
