"Well, that was quite the scene, yeah?" Dennis summed up, rather sarcastically, as he walked side-by-side with Colin down the street.
The Ministry celebration gala had began to disperse soon after Ron and Draco's tiff and Colin felt it was time to call it a night.  He snorted when he caught his brother sneaking glances at the parchment with Pansy Parkinson's number scratch on it.

"What?" Dennis asked, somewhat twitchily.

"You and Pansy Parkinson?" Colin replied, as if that were answer enough.  "You only flirted with her -- and shamelessly, I might add -- because she was with Nott and you know he hates you."

"I am hardly 'shameless'," Dennis said with a pout.

"Pfwoar!  But your taste--"

"You're hardly one to talk," Dennis said, only mildly irritated.  "Especially considering who you pined over for the better part of the war."

"Sod off," Colin grumbled.  He certainly couldn't argue the point, however; Dennis was absolutely right.

"Besides, she started on me, not the other way 'round.  She's a fine bird... pug-face and all."

Colin began to fidget with his camera.  "I'm sure she's heaven."

They turned the corner, past the fountain commemorating the Goblin Treatise, until they came to an old elm tree, tall and majestic.  It looked woefully out of place, which was the first clue to its true nature.  Dennis playfully pushed Colin's shoulder.

"This is me," he said, nodding at the tree.

Dennis spread his arms for a hug.  When Colin embraced him, he smelt of cheap liquor and cigarettes, Wild Magic and improper thoughts.  It was undeniably 'Dennis', and Colin had no call to ask for a better brother.

"So, what are you going to do now?" Dennis asked when they pulled apart.

"I don't know," Colin replied.  "Travel a bit, I think.  Visit Mum and Da.  You're okay?  Money-wise, I mean?"

Dennis dismissed the question with a wave, which Colin understood to mean 'no, I'm broke but I shan't be asking you for any hand-outs, ruffian!'  He made himself a mental reminder to deposit some money -- Euros and Galleons -- in the morning.

Colin shrugged.  "Well, I might travel a bit after that.  You know, Hawaii or summat."

Suddenly, Dennis leapt into his arms again and held Colin tightly.

"You're amazing, brother," Dennis said, his voice muffled in Colin's shirt.  "Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."  He lifted his head -- he was still significantly shorter than Colin -- and whispered.  "It should have been you, yeah?  He'll realise his mistake soon enough."

Before Colin could reply -- or even understand what he meant -- Dennis had pulled away and walked over to the tree.  A wizard's second after he touched the trunk of the odd, elm tree, Dennis Creevey was gone.
