It’s early morning P.E class and Yixing hates these days the most because if there is anything worse than getting up so early in the morning, it’s getting up so early in the morning and having to get changed in the cold.

They all huddle around inside the change rooms and Yixing quickly pulls off his shirt, slipping in to his sports clothes before the cold can bite at his bare skin. He glances a little further down and his eyes fall on Wu Fan. He doesn't seem to be in a rush as he pulls his shirt over his head, stretching his back before slipping in to his shorts. When he bends down to tie the laces of his shoes together, his shorts fall down over his hips a little, revealing a thin blue strip of his underwear. Yixing huffs a small laugh, lips pulling into a lopsided smile. He can almost see it now - the attraction that Wu Fan holds, as his hair falls over his eyes, the muscles of his arms tensing slightly as his fingers deftly tie his shoelaces into knots.

There's a groan from beside him and Yixing turns around to see Zitao following his gaze.

"He's always like this," Zitao mutters quietly, "He's lucky the girls don't change too close to us or he'd be mobbed."

Yixing laughs and Wu Fan looks up at the sound, smiling a little when he meets Yixing's eyes. He pulls his shirt close to his chest self-consciously before he mouths 'what?' Yixing shakes his head and waves the question away, stuffing his school uniform into the small locker.

He turns to Zitao who leans on his own locker beside him, arms crossed and eyes still trained in Wu Fan's direction.

"Are you in love with him?" Yixing asks, because it’s something he’s wondered for a while. Zitao looks at him sharply, raising an eyebrow.

"Well aren't you a bit too serious for so early in the morning?” he lets out a short laugh and his eyes drift back over to Wu Fan, lips pulling into a thoughtful smile, “but no, I don't."

Perhaps it shouldn’t surprise him, but it does, and Yixing’s eyes widen a little at his words.

"I know you guys like to tease me about him but, I don't really think I could love someone I don't properly know," Zitao continues, running a hand through his hair and upsetting his curls so that they stick out at odd angles.

He grins, a toothy smile that displays a hint of mischief.

"That doesn't mean I'm going to stop looking at him though," he says and Yixing punches him on the arm.

“Creep,” he says and Zitao just waggles his eyebrows.

Lu Han is away sick and both Zitao and Jongdae don't take Modern History, which leaves Minseok alone with Yixing in class. The two of them don’t really spend much time alone together, due to the fact that Lu Han is generally around at least one of them if not both. But they get along well enough and it’s not awkward at all as they sit beside each other, legs occasionally knocking and elbows brushing.

"I forgot my book, can I borrow some paper?" Yixing asks, and Minseok rips off a sheet, offering it over, but not before Yixing notices a slip of pink paper hidden beneath his books. He grins and reaches over, yanking it free from the pile of exercise books stacked above it. Minseok colours considerably.

"So it was you sending Lu Han those letters too?"

"Yeah," Minseok says, snatching it back from Yixing, and shuffling uncomfortably in his chair.

"Could you choose a worse colour?"

Minseok shoots him an annoyed glare and crosses his arms over his chest.

"Shut up." He looks up suddenly, a flash of fright crossing his eyes. "You won't tell him will you."

"Of course not! Who do you take me for."

Minseok relaxes, but only slightly, his thumb creasing the corner of the pink paper. Yixing tilts his head, eyes watching Minseok with amusement.

"He has no idea you know. He can be a little bit stupid sometimes."

The corner of Minseok's mouth twitches into a smile.

"To be completely honest," Yixing continues with a sly grin, "he probably won't know until you have your tongue down his throat. And maybe not even then."

Minseok lets out a strangled sound and remains frozen in horror for the rest of the lesson.

*"You know, if I keep going well like this, I might not need you much longer," Yixing says, tilting his chair backwards against the desk behind him and kicking his legs out in front.

Wu Fan doesn't look up from checking over Yixing's work but makes a sound of disbelief in his throat.

"Don't get too cocky."

"Well I couldn't do it without my amazing tutor," Yixing says, loving the way Wu Fan tries, but fails, to suppress a smile.

"You're too nice to me."

"No i'm not."

"True," Wu Fan deadpans, "I don't know what I was thinking." He grins and Yixing's chair rocks to a stop as he crosses his elbows on the table.

"You should sit with us at lunch - I mean with my friends," Yixing says suddenly and Wu Fan looks at him, pen poised just above the paper.

"I don't know Yixing..."

"Come on, why not? It's not like they're axe murderers or something." He inwardly laughs at the thought of Lu Han wielding an axe, but Wu Fan seems to remain apprehensive.

"It's just," he begins, eyes glancing away and body falling in on itself a little, "I've never had real friends like you have."

Yixing blinks at him and keeps looking at him until Wu Fan turns to meet his gaze, confusion etched into the frown on his face.

"What is it?"

"Nothing you - you just looked so cute then." Wu Fan's frown deepens and he punches Yixing lightly on the arm, although Yixing notes that there is a flush of colour across his cheeks. Embarrassment is a good look on him, Yixing thinks with small snigger.

"Go away."

Yixing refuses to move and just smiles happily, much to Wu Fan's annoyance. He rolls his eyes and returns to Yixing's homework, choosing to ignore the eyes watching him.

"Here, you have this part wrong. Just re-write this sentence." Yixing leans over, arms touching and thighs pressed together beneath the desk - he can feel Wu Fan's warmth even through the fabric of his school pants. Wu Fan shakes his head when Yixing tries again, reaching over to pluck the pen from his grasp.

"It's like this remember, an apostrophe goes here to show ownership."

It's only now that Yixing realises how close they are, how he can actually count the individual eyelashes brushing against Wu Fans cheek, how his eyes aren't just brown but a dark colour that seeps to hazel at the edges, rimmed in a golden hue. Wu Fan's eyes flicker over to him, and Yixing feels his heart jolt in his chest.

He coughs, feeling a slight flush crawl up the back of his neck and forces himself to look back at the paper in front of him.

"Okay so then I should change this one too right?" He can still feel Wu Fan's eyes on him but he refuses to turn sideways; refuses to meet that piercing gaze.

"Yeah," Wu Fan says quietly, his voice a little tentative. The warmth against his thigh disappears as Wu Fan shifts sideways a little, enough to put distance between them. "That's right," he says, and returns to checking over Yixing's homework.

It’s the next day at lunch that Wu Fan decides to take Yixing up on his offer.

He is walking past their table when he stops, and glances at Yixing before turning his eyes back to the hover of girls waiting expectantly at their usual spot. He winces a little and seems to hesitate; eyes flickering back to meet Yixing’s, who smiles in return.

Wu Fan’s lips pull into a timid smile and he sits himself down beside Yixing, hands folded in his lap and looking more uncomfortable than Yixing can ever remember him being before. Lu Han, who is halfway through a sentence, trails off into silence as everyone’s eyes turn to Wu Fan. Zitao is looking like he just won the lottery.

Yixing coughs and sends them all a pointed look which he hopes says something along the lines of ‘I know what you’re all thinking but you have to be nice to him okay’.

“Um guys, this is Wu Fan.” Wu Fan offers a small wave and Yixing stifles a laugh at his awkwardness.

Lu Han raises an eyebrow. “We know,” he says, and Jongdae sends Zitao a wink as the latter flushes a bright red and suddenly finds his food fascinating.

“This is Lu Han, and Jongdae, and Minseok and Zitao,” Yixing says and Wu Fan nods at each of them.

They lapse into silence, an exchange of looks which tells more than their words could. Wu Fan still looks intensely uncomfortable so Yixing finds his hand under the table and gives it a reassuring squeeze. Yixing catches Lu Han’s eye and Lu Han seems to get the hint, recovering his conversation from before the interruption.

“So my dance teacher told me I should enter the competition, and the audition is next week."

"Wow, that's amazing," Minseok says and Jongdae nods enthusiastically in agreement.

Yixing reaches across the table and pats his arm lightly. "That's awesome Lu Han, i'm sure you'll do great."

"So you dance then?" Wu Fan asks, deciding to speak up, and Lu Han nods.

"He's the best," Minseok says, his smile a little shy as Lu Han sends him a grateful look.

"He thinks he is the best," Yixing corrects, ignoring the kick he gets under the table.

'Excuse me, who is the one competing?"

"Auditioning."

Jongdae sighs and leans across the table to look at Wu Fan. "Rule number one is never get these two started about their dancing."

Wu Fan laughs and Yixing feels the fingers around his hand loosen a little - although they don't let go.

"Okay, so what's rule number two?"

Jongdae grins." Never go near Zitao."

Wu Fan's eyes flicker across to where Zitao is sitting and is currently shooting a venomous glare in Jongdae's direction.

"Why can't we go near Zitao?"

"Oh no we can," Jongdae elaborates, smile bordering on something quite evil, "but you probably shouldn't."

Wu Fan's eyebrows furrow in confusion and Zitao offers a forced smile.

"I'm sorry," he says, "ignore him, he thinks he's funny." Somehow, Zitao manages to maintain eye contact with Wu Fan for a few good seconds before he averts his gaze back towards the table, cheeks a little coloured.

"So, are we still going to the movies on the weekend?"

Lu Han nods, "Of course, I need a study break!"

"Lu Han, you're on a constant study break," Yixing says, but Lu Han chooses to ignore him, his attention instead focusing on Wu Fan.

"Did you want to come?" he asks. Wu Fan jerks a little, surprised at being addressed. He smiles; a flicker of shock mingled with happiness.

"Sure, I'll come."

The bell sounds and they all stand up to leave, Wu Fan's fingers finally slipping away from Yixing's hand. As they turn to go, Wu Fan leans over, his breath hot against Yixing's cheek.

"You're right, your friends are nice," he says softly.

Yixing swallows, because there is a little too much proximity between them.

"Told you my friends weren't axe murderers," he manages to say and Wu Fan laughs loudly, pressing even closer as they walk to class side by side.

Saturday comes around and they all sit in the small food court just outside the movies for lunch. Wu Fan stays close to Yixing most of the time, with only a few interjections during sentences, but he seems to get along well with the others. He even had an in depth conversation with Zitao about sport for a good fifteen minutes much to Yixing’s entertainment.

“Apparently this movie is shit,” Jongdae says, sipping on his carton of milk.

Minseok hums in agreement. “Yeah I heard the same.”

“That’s what you get when Lu Han chooses the movie,” Yixing says with a grin, flinching when Lu Han throws a faux punch at him.

“Well excuse me, it was either this or a horror movie and we all know what happened last time.”

There are a series of sniggers and very un-subtle glances at Yixing who frowns and sinks low into his chair. Wu Fan smiles, seemingly amused.

“What happened?”

“Nothing,” Yixing says, hoping his glare is enough to shut his friends up. Clearly it isn’t, because Zitao speaks anyway.

“He cried.”

“I did not cry.”

“Tears, literally all down his cheeks.”

Wu Fan looks at him. “Seriously?”

“I don’t like ghosts okay,” Yixing says quietly as Lu Han snickers in the background.

There is a glint of something almost wicked which flashes in Wu Fan’s eyes as he turns to Lu Han.

“Well now I have to see that. Maybe we should go to the horror movie instead?”

Lu Han grins and gives him a hi-five, nodding in approval.

“I think we’ll get along quite well Wu Fan.”

“I hate you both,” Yixing says and Wu Fan sends him a smile, although it’s a little softer this time.

“Don’t worry Yixing, I promise to hold your hand,” he says, as Jongdae guffaws loudly.

Wu Fan reaches over and drapes his arm across Yixing's shoulders, laughter still in his eyes as he sends him a wink. Yixing forces himself to smile back and does his best to ignore the way his heart rate triples, banging loudly against his rib cage.
