I've had a similar reaction to Zack's fifth grade homework. He's had problems asking him to give the amount of money based on the coins shown. Again, like you said, 1st grade stuff. I think perhaps they are just trying to a get a feel for what the kids are capable of? On the other hand, count your lucky stars because Petey comes home with at least four pages of homework a night and it sucks :) On the nights we have soccer and/or cub scouts we really do not have time for so much homework. I really dislike it.
I think the $ thing is because no one seems to use "cash" anymore so it's not as easy to grasp when they haven't practiced all summer? They now have cc and debit cars for kids for everything.
Keep us updated! I really really like hearing what everyone else's kids are doing, since I have no idea how my approach compares to what Ellie would be learning if she were in second grade this year. We have just started with first-grade math this summer, aiming to catch her up to grade level by the time she finishes second grade at the end of this year, so my idea of normal is all askew. She's reading sixth-grade books but clock faces at the quarter hour would be just right for her at the moment.
It's the first weeks so they try to do some "catching up" with those that almsot didn't make it and those that did make it so the new teacher can judge where everyone is in the level. My boys have a hard time with "time"' they are so used to digital time
I think this is because they assume that kids forget everything over the summer and they are refreshing their memory.
Tovah and Natalie have been bringing home homework like: There are four frogs in the pond. Five more jump in. Now how many are there?
It is kind of ridiculous, but the girls claim to like these worksheets. Anyway, Natalie works on many-digit addition with me, and Tovah has been making her way through that awesome workbook we got at Barnes and Noble.
