Friday Update: Opening up the Thesis topic

Sep 07, 2007 14:34

After a refreshing talk with Wes and Cecilia yesterday, I may change my thesis topic completely. The problem is, I LOVE the idea I had about food and hunger in DC (and MANY thanks to Jen for the pep talks and links), but I can't think of an interesting way to cover it that doesn't tread on the same ground as another student ( Read more... )

Hmm...the gay marriage theme sounds really interesting. It would totally be controversial though, so you'd have to be up for that. I don't think it's unrealistic to expect some backlash, whether by gay rights groups or by those against gay marriage. But if you did do it, it could be pretty awesome, and like you said, could get your name out there.

Hunger issues are always important, but if you can't think of a different way to approach it, what choice do you have? Civil rights is also important.

Unfortunately, you still have to decide, haha.

oh, and also...I know I could find a way to do the hunger issues differently. Every interesting topic has tens or hundreds of films about it. It's just that I wonder if I could come up with anything as interesting as the other girl's idea, or think of something on a slightly different tangent so I'd stop comparing myself to her.

I mean, civil rights ARE important, not IS important. Duh.

Documentaries rock. I still have to watch One Punk Under God, I just haven't had time!

Are we talking about marriage as the religious marriage, or marriage as the legal rights/benefits/obligations (i.e. civil union)?

we are talking about marriage as the legal rights, but NOT called a civil union...called marriage. As in, you get married by whoever you want (priest, judge, etc). We are talking about the same options that straight people have right now, esentially.

we'll yammer about this in person, but it sure sounds like a solid idea, and i don't think you're going to be "harming" anyone's cause, particularly if you're only covering the issue as its dealt with from within the LGBT community.

i want to be helpful but my brain is fried. perhaps the next time we can hang out we can discuss it more. i need to hear these opposite ideas since i am pro civil union type marriage for gay and lesbians. however, i have not looked more into it than knowing that i think it is a right that everyone should have. i am intrigued. i do think this is a topic that will get noticed.
