After a refreshing talk with Wes and Cecilia yesterday, I may change my thesis topic completely. The problem is, I LOVE the idea I had about food and hunger in DC (and MANY thanks to Jen for the pep talks and links), but I can't think of an interesting way to cover it that doesn't tread on the same ground as another student ( Read more... )

Actually that sounds like a great documentary that will explore in depth multiple sides of a complex issue that is often boiled down to a yes/no talking point in political campaigns ( ... )

Thank you for your support. I'm not sure what my film would show yet. From what I've heard, there is a growing movement among the queer community to fight against gay marriage, namely because these people believe that marriage is an inherently biased institution against people who want to make such a commitment. There are a lot of people who do not want to get married and thus, will never be able to share in the rights of married people. So yes, it is about the rights of individuals and about what the state should and should not be able to give/hold back.

What I hope to show is that both the queer groups against gay marriage and the groups for it come from the same base; all they want is equality for everyone. They just go about seeking it in extremely different ways.

Yup, and I've heard that view of marriage as a biased institution before from individuals, but haven't seen it reported or documented, really, so it seems like good subject material.

I think they are all very good ideas and I agree with the other people's suggestions above. I haven't really made up my mind if I am for or against gay marriage. In both my parents religions (Christian and Muslim) they believe God made marriage for a man and a woman so I probably would be against it but personally I am ok with bisexuality if it is just fun and games and not like a serious relationship. Another neat idea might be to write about polygamy. There is this show on tv my old roommates used to watch called "Big Love" that this guy had all these wives and he took turns with them every night and they went through all this stuff - it was interesting. Forgot which channel but it was one of those paid channels.
