Is a fear of growing old a common feeling for someone 25 years old?

I have it!!!!! Because I remember being a kid and thinking 18 seemed so old. Then being 18 and thinking 21 seemed old. Then being 21 and thinking 25 sounded old. And now I'm 25 and 30 seems old-ish, but now that I know the pattern...sigh.

But I also think of it this way: I'm 25 and that's only 1/4 to 1/3 of my life, meaning I have 3/4 to 2/3 left! That's a lot! And I'm going to be one rockin' old person so it'll be ok. You will be too (rockin').

I think my issue is that my connection to my body is something i fought hard for and deeply treasure. I used to be tremendously uncoordinated, and really out-of-touch. I'm not so much afraiding of growing old, so much as losing that, specifically. Its something I have deeply associated with age, because thats what most grownups i've known have been like. But lately I've been meeting a lot of people who defy the stereotype. I have a friend who is in her late 30s and is a pilates instructor. She is in better shape and looks younger than I do by far! One of my clients is over 40 and you'd guess mid 20s.

I feel like there's a certain amount of giving up on one's body that is inherent in the other type of adult, and thats the core of my fear.

yeah, I've had back pain for a year now and knee pain since high school and I'm constantly worried about how it'll be when I'm older. I understand.

Also, if this is the prime of my life... it freaks me out that life would be less good. Not that life now is bad, but I wouldn't want it worse than now.

Hey Cory, I've read a few articles that suggest that the prime of life is actually in people's sixties. Most people are still at the height of their mental game, and if they exercise and eat right, are still physically able.

Empirical studies show that though people think that they are happier in their youth, when asked to rate their overall happiness, people rate themselves as being happier the older they get.

Family medical history notwithstanding, if you are active and take care of yourself, you stand a good chance of being healthy for a really long time, especially as medical science continues to advance.

Think positively!

I agree!

I was actually having this thought during a workout. I've begun to feel those little spots of tightness and soreness and I changed my exercise routine to focus on flexibility and a little bit of strength rather than just running. I was thinking, its good that I'm putting effort into fighting the symptoms of aging, rather than simply accepting them and getting bitter. Thats the true genesis of this post.

So yes, I agree. Positivity is the bestest! But the fear is still there, even though I take a positive approach towards dealing with it.
