It depends on the discipline, I think. I know that philo papers are supposed to make the paper's direction very explicit, e.g. "First I will analyze what it means to be an object. Next, I will..." etc.

My advice is to make the paper into a huge party about how huge of a party the paper is. That's my strategy.
