Animal Shelter and Euthaniasia Reflections

Oct 21, 2010 08:35

If you are seeing this both here and on Facebook I apologize. I have a LOT of people I only have on one or the other. But yes, I wrote this reflection the other night after watching a very tough video on euthanasia and animal shelters. Under the cut is the video (warning: it will probably make you cry, esp if you like animals), my reflection, and ( Read more... )

I read all of this and it was beautiful. If you had a public journal, this would be the first LJ post I'd ever link to from my own. I'm so frustrated by careless owners both with pets and those abandoning them and my heart goes out to every homeless or abused domesticated animal. They've been bred to be tied into human contact and companionship and the way some are treated is just heartbreaking.

Thank you for doing for them what some of us who care are unable to do. There's so many great causes out there and it's great to see others volunteering for ones dear to my heart. <3

I wasn't going to, but I made it public. If even one person I don't know can read it and perhaps have it make them think twice, it would be well worth it.

No one can do everything but you do what you can. Thanks hon!

I read through all of that, and I've wanted to ell you what an admirable job you do with animals. I've grown up on a farm, but I never really had to put the amount of work and care that shelter workers and technicians do to save animals.

The reason I no longer keep pets, no matter how much I love animals, is that I don't have the ability to care for them properly due to traveling frequently. I hope more people realize what a responsibility this is.

We have had people drop their animals off because they are at work or traveling too much. It is one thing if that was something they did not know when they brought the pet, but it is really cruel to put them through that. I really wish more people (like yourself!) would think about those things.

Thank you for reading! <3

NATALIA AND SPIKE!!! GRIMMY! and I forget your other cat's name, OTL

I read through all of this and admire your honesty. Some people I've known who work at shelters like to pretend these sorts of things don't happen or a no-kill shelter means completely no kill. It's nice to see the real perspective behind it. Keep strong and keep doing the great work you do at the shelter!! <3

To me, keeping it a secret or sugar coating it is doing the animals a disservice. If someone comes in vacillating between at pet store where they can get an animal instantly or a shelter where we take time to do a background check, we are not afraid to tell them that by buying from there, they may be causing another animal to be put to sleep.

They told us that when we adopted Grimmy, when we had our eyes on another cat who someone else wanted as a pair with its sibling. It changed our decision, and for the better - for EVERYONE.

Our gray cat is Casval. ;-)

Thank you for reading! And while I am VERY sorry for your loss, I am glad that your family helped save another animal. You're right, your old dog will never be replaced, but it is great to share your home with another animal!

BTW, hope all is well with Kamille!
